I am a survivor of physical and sexual abuse and I know the difference therapy has made in my life.
Hi, my name is Jo (she/her). I am a working class, cis gendered, Queer woman. Getting to know these, and many more parts of myself, has been and continues to be a deeply personal journey of unlearning, healing and becoming. For example, as part of this, I have also reclaimed fat and dyke as part of my identity. We do not need to identify in the same way for us to work together. Whatever the shape of your story you deserve to have a space where you don’t have to perform, explain or justify and can explore your version of self.

I focus on helping clients become empowered through self-awareness. Sometimes we need assistance to discover hidden parts of ourselves. We may want guidance to work out the underlying causes of the issues we are struggling with and to understand the meaning we give to our life events. I will assist you in exploring the motives behind behaviours, unhelpful thought patterns, and overwhelming feelings. Who would you be without the thoughts that upset you? Who would you be if you could feel free from the emotions and situations that weigh you down?

20+ years supporting families, couples, and individuals, I specialise in navigating complex challenges such as trauma, anxiety, identity, abuse recovery, and relational conflict.
My ideal client is someone navigating relational challenges, whether it is couples, families, or individuals feeling stuck in cycles of conflict, disconnection, or life transitions like grief or divorce. They want to understand how their actions ripple through their relationships, not just assign blame. Together, we explore communication blocks, cultural or generational legacies, and unspoken rules shaping their struggles. Their goal? To feel heard, shift draining cycles, and co-create new ways of connecting. They’re curious about how their broader systems (family, community, society) and how it impacts their story.

I’ve worked with those affected by childhood trauma, domestic abuse, relationship trauma, bereavement & low self worth.
I offer trauma focused recovery therapy in London & Canterbury & I see clients online nationally. Many people I work with describe feeling stuck in patterns of anxiety, self-criticism, low self worth or disconnected from their emotions — but unsure why. Together, we explore what shaped those patterns: experiences of emotional neglect, childhood trauma, bereavement, relationship trauma or a narcissistic family system. I do this work because of my own experiences of childhood trauma. I get what it feels like to never feel good enough, sabotaged by self criticism, while pushing down what happened & pretending everything is fine.

It could be that you have experienced sexual assault, survived domestic abuse, have a new or evolving health diagnosis, experienced a bereavement, or have recognised that your childhood wasn’t like other people’s.
Our sessions can help you find the life you want in a space where you can feel seen and heard, and where you’re not alone. Maybe you can say things to me that you’ve never said to anyone else. It is possible to get your future back and I’ve seen it happen time and again.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
