I am here to offer you a safe, calm, confidential, non-judgmental space, and listen to whatever you want to bring into therapy, no matter how serious or benign you might be finding it. My initial interest in Existential therapy was informed by my personal and professional experiences. Throughout the years I have explored diverse ways of supporting my clients, looking to improve their emotional and spiritual balance. Existential therapy encapsulates all my core beliefs about the therapeutic process and the powerful therapeutic connection between psychology and philosophy. It is anchored in the lived experiences (not their theoretical representation) and their relational context. It relates to human existence and predicaments, our choices and responsibilities, meaning and purpose, freedom and limitations.

I specialise in work with depression, anxiety, relationship problems and break-down, major life changes, life crisis, eating disorders, trauma, PTSD, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, bereavement, managing stress relating to
chronic illness
and medical crisis.
Life can become overwhelming, confusing, and difficult to manage. Experiences such as loss, bereavement and major life changes like a medical crisis can make us lose our sense of self and purpose. Depression, anxiety and personality disorders can distort our sense of self, rob us off our full personal potential and quality of life leaving us feeling depleted. Therapy is a place to regain and restore your sense of self and purpose and to help you turn these experiences to an opportunity to grow.

"Depression is the common cold of psychopathology and has touched the lives of us all" (Dr Martin Seligman). In my 20 year experience as a CBT therapist I have learned that Seligman is right - everybody will experience at one point in their life depression, anxiety or another form of mental health problems. Some of us will manage on their own, some of us will need help. Seeking help for stress and mental health problems should not have any stigma attached to it - it is one way of dealing with the impact of living in an imperfect world.

I work with a range of issues including: anxiety, addiction, depression, chemsex, gender identity, gender dysphoria and transitioning, pain and
chronic illness
, psychosexual issues, forensics/sexual offending, sexuality and sexual identity, suicidality and self-harm.
I’m interested in what works. For you. So I take a pluralistic, integrative approach and don’t limit myself to one particular way of working. Whether you’re seeing me for counselling, schema-based therapy or psychosexual therapy, I'll tailor my approach to suit your needs. And it’s the relationship between you and I which will be central to the work. Because I’m not a friend, colleague or family member, you can think the unthinkable and speak the unspeakable in a judgement-free space. You can rely on me to be honest with you, and bring into your awareness your blind spots, and things on the edge of your awareness you might missing.

I can imagine, given that you are here, there may be something in your life that is causing you discomfort. Welcome, and well done for taking the first step towards getting some support. Some people seek out therapy because they have felt depressed, anxious or angry for a long time; others may want help for relationship difficulties, self-destructive habits or a
chronic illness
that is interfering with their emotional or physical well-being. Sometimes, unexpected changes or circumstances also bring people into therapy - for example, going through a divorce, feeling overwhelmed by a new job, or grieving the loss of a family member.

Due to my systemic and personal background I have deep knowledge of immigration, war trauma, infertility, adoption, and
chronic illness
, so I can offer profound understanding.
I offer a balanced set of approaches that I can apply to suit your needs. Some people are better helped with insights into their patterns; others may need more skills and again others may feel they do everything right yet they are still unhappy. I strongly believe in trying out new behaviour, as this creates the biggest shifts and minimizes relapse. I integrate lifestyle factors such as nutrition when necessary. When the chemicals aren't right, talking isn't going to lift your mood. We will always explore the source of your issues, relating it to your system, so as to radically release and uproot it and make change more effortless.

How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
