This gentle process allows her to understand how relationships and experiences have shaped a child 's internal emotional world.
Melissa has a background as a Special Needs Teacher working for ten years in mainstream schools supporting children with specific learning difficulties, in particular ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia and OCD. As a Child and Adolescent Integrative Psychotherapist she uses a variety of techniques and methods, such as art, play, symbol, metaphor and various media, to help children and adolescents who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions or behaviour. Melissa recognises that children and adolescents sometimes struggle to put their feelings into words and therefore supports her clients to express their feelings safely in different ways.

For new parents - we’ll use music to help process the changes and support the attachment relationship between you and your new child , during pregnancy or after a birth or adoption.
Creative arts therapy is for adults, children , and babies. As in traditional talk therapy, we’ll use the sessions to form a relationship and focus on areas that have brought you to therapy. In the sessions you'll have the chance to use music or other art activities to share and express your emotions. Sometimes you might choose to use this as a springboard for talking, or it can be a way to explore and process when you’re not ready to verbally process yet.

Life’s pressures can sometimes make us feel unsure of ourselves and this can make us feel unhappy. Our true selves can get buried under the weight of conditioning and other people’s ideas of who we are, and we can lose sense of where we are going. I am a warm, caring integrative therapist who will work by encouraging you to find answers from within. I can help you discover the person you were before you drew conclusions from others. I believe we all have the power to choose who we want to be. There is only one person that we can change and that is ourself and I can help you as you embark on this journey of discovery and growth.

I offer a service to children , adolescents, and young adults to allow them to begin to understand and explore how their past experiences have impacted on their lives, to be able to regulate their emotions and behaviours in order to cope with life’s challenges. Often the problems experienced are related to or are the result of past traumas or even just finding it hard to cope with life generally with all its pressures and difficulties. I can also see families and parents who can sometimes struggle to understand the problems facing them as a family unit. I am offering a safe and non-judgemental space, where we can begin to understand

Working with children , through metaphor and play therapy, my aim is to enable children to understand and more effectively manage their emotions and behaviour, to find their voice and tell their story.
You may come to therapy to speak about issues that make you angry, afraid or unhappy or that simply don't make sense. Understanding that we are all unique, with our own strengths, qualities and interests, as well as challenges, is hugely important for our well-being. We also know that through having a balanced view of ourselves, we can feel better equipped to cope with difficult emotional and psychological experiences and make positive connections with others. In our sessions, we will have the chance to explore whatever is troubling you to help you identify and confront such issues and feel more confident about yourself.

If you are a parent or carer who has concerns about the emotional wellbeing of your child or your adolescent, email me so I can call you back as soon as I can for a free consultation to discuss how we can move forward as early intervention is crucial.
As a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist, I was trained to carefully observe children and young people and respond to what they are consciously and unconsciously communicating through their behaviour, verbally and non-verbally, through unstructured play, their silence, and other ways to communicate their emotional difficulties or distress. I have several years working in the NHS in CAMHS, and with charity organizations, providing evidence-based therapy and individual & group interventions for children and adolescents and supporting the networks involved in their care so that they can build resilience, flourish and live fuller lives.

Outside of private practice, I work with children and young people in school settings, providing a safe, nurturing and person-centred environment for children who have been identified as in need of additional support.
I am an MBACP registered psychotherapist. I work with clients of all ages, but have a particular interest in working with children and young people. I have a longstanding interest in how our early relationships affect our development. I offer counselling (including play therapy where appropriate) and parenting support. I work as an integrative therapist. This means I blend elements from different approaches and I tailor this according to each of my client’s needs. This can include exploring how buried thoughts, feelings and experiences shape our current relationships.

Child Counsellors

Do I need to attend therapy with my child?

Parents are an integral part of a child’s therapy, but the specifics of their involvement vary. If your child is young, you may attend most or all sessions; if your child is older, you may attend a few sessions or none; sometimes a therapist may ask you to have a session on your own. Whatever the arrangement, you should expect to work collaboratively with the therapist, your child, and your family members to take steps to help support your child.

How long are sessions with child therapists?

Children’s therapy sessions can last 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. The length of the session may depend on your child’s age and the type of therapy practiced. You can discuss this with therapists you consult and the one you ultimately move forward with.

How do I get a child to agree to seek therapy?

The best approach is to have an open-ended conversation with your child about how they’re doing and what they might be struggling with. When you raise therapy, discuss the concept in an age-appropriate way, for example explaining that a therapist’s job is to help kids handle their hard or uncomfortable feelings. Frame therapy positively, as an opportunity to explore and build emotional skills—it’s an important tool in the toolbox to help kids feel their best.

How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for my child?

A child needs to feel comfortable opening up about their thoughts and feelings, so if your child feels a sense of comfort, ease, and trust with their therapist, that’s a great sign. In addition, a therapist is a good fit for your child if the two can communicate well together; a clinician should be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and in an age-appropriate manner.
