I believe that therapy allows you to take a more active role in understanding and experiencing your emotions. When we are not aware of our emotions or ideas, it can mean we act out certain behaviours – or experience certain feelings - without knowing why. And while we might be able to tolerate this for some time – perhaps even for a long time - I believe there is a difference between surviving and living. Developing a closer – or less mysterious - relationship with ourselves can allow us to go beyond living life passively and begin to really experience it.

Midlife is particularly significant for women, as it’s when most of us will experience peri/menopause and it’s often a period of change: in our bodies, emotions, and cognition, and also possibly when our roles shift. Whatever our individual situation, it’s inevitably a time of transition and challenge. Therapy is more than healing, reflection, developing coping strategies and resilience, deepening self awareness, and all that good stuff. It’s also about grieving and expressing rage, fear and resentment, analysing our failures and successes, thinking about our identities and reconnecting with our Self, which is often neglected.

Are you exhausted from trying to hold it all together?
You've spent years trying to understand yourself through advice, strategies, or self-reflection, yet still feel stuck. Maybe you’ve even tried therapy before but didn’t feel fully met.
You’re not broken. Often, what’s missing is a space that actually understands both your inner world and how your brain works.
I work with people who experience ADHD or neurodivergence, offering relational therapy that makes room for difference, complexity, and compassion

Life can feel like a battlefield when childhood wounds, complex trauma, and the scars of abusive relationships leave their mark. You may find yourself stuck in painful cycles of overthinking every interaction, doubting your self-worth, or repeating patterns that no longer serve you. Perhaps you carry the weight of people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, or an inner voice that never seems to quieten. You might wonder, “Why can’t I just move on?” You’re not alone.

I am a genderqueer femme lesbian therapist, specialising in work with adult queer and trans clients. My practice centres people whose lives sit outside the default setting: trans and non-binary folk, polycules, kink practitioners, queer migrants and people of colour, and anyone still discovering how they wish to live and love. Alongside clinical work I have lectured on LGBTQ+ mental health at postgraduate level and run group sessions for LGBTQ+ people of colour to share their stories together. Therapy with me is spacious and practical. Some weeks we focus on day-to-day coping — sleep, boundaries, breath, nervous-system regulation.

Hi, I'm Sophie, and I am a CBT and EMDR therapist. I work with people feeling low, anxious and stuck to recognise what is holding you back and empower you to move towards the future you want. Our problems can present in so many different ways and I am here to help untangle and make sense of the 'why' things are the way they are, so together we can figure out the 'how' to move on.

Life can bring us into contact with parts of ourselves that feel hard to name, carrying emotions, desires, identities, or experiences that don't fit neatly into the world around us. We’re often pushed from one demand to the next, stretched into shapes that don’t feel authentic, urged to want more, achieve more, be more, and somehow be perfect, no matter the cost.
Perhaps you're carrying shame about your sexuality or kink life, navigating the emotional landscape of a BDSM dynamic, or simply longing for a space where you don't have to edit yourself before walking in.

Individuals and couples come to me when they feel stuck, disconnected, or uncertain in their sexual and relational lives; often navigating shame, desire differences, body confusion, breakdowns in communication, or a sense that something deeper is not being met. Alongside this, many are also curious about expanding into more aliveness: intimacy, fantasy, kink, alternative relating, emotional honesty, and relational depth.
My approach is grounded, somatic and relational where we move between difficulty and expansion, supporting greater embodiment, awareness, clarity, and the capacity to meet yourself and others more fully.

How does body image affect mental health?
Poor body image can influence mental health because it can reduce self-esteem and decrease functioning in other areas of one's life. Negative body image may hinder someone's ability to perform daily tasks, including professional and social responsibilities, because they may feel self-conscious or shame surrounding their appearance; a desire to change one's body as a result of negative body image can also trigger behaviors such as extreme dieting, excessive exercise, or obsessive social media comparison. Poor body image is associated with a number of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and eating disorders, although many people experience negative body image even in the absence of meeting the diagnostic criteria for any mental health disorders.
What does it mean to have a positive body image?
Body image refers to how one internally perceives their appearance and internally "talks" to themself about their body. Positive body image is therefore indicative of a positive perception of one's self and positive internal self-talk that underscores one's strengths. People who have good body image often have higher self-esteem, self-worth, and self-confidence, and they also often recognise how external factors, such as social media or relationship patterns, can influence body image. While body image can change at different life stages and in response to various triggers, practicing self-acceptance and a body-positive mindset can help maintain a more stable sense of positive body image.
Is body image the same as self-esteem?
Body image and self-esteem are often related, but they are distinct concepts. Self-esteem is a broader term that can be shaped by a number of factors outside of body image, including one's functioning at school or in the workplace; it refers to one's capacity to handle various life challenges. Poor body image can be one way in which one's self-esteem is reduced. Reduced self-esteem as a result of poor body image can cause individuals to feel negative about their appearance, withdraw from social interactions, and/or rely on harmful behaviours as a coping mechanism. A "body positive" approach to body image therapy is therefore often used to encourage a more positive view of one's self and thus encourage better self-esteem.
What type of therapy is best to foster a positive body image?
The type of therapy best suited to improve body image depends on each person, as there is not a single therapy specific to body image improvement. That said, many individuals with poor body image benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based therapy. CBT can be used to help challenge distorted or negative thoughts about one's body, while ACT and mindfulness practices can facilitate a more positive body image through self-acceptance and identification of one's personal strengths. Regardless of treatment type, clients should look for body image therapists who encourage the development of a sense of self outside of their external appearance and help clients reduce unwanted behaviours developed as a result of poor self-esteem, such as dieting or disordered eating patterns.
