An experienced and fully accredited psychotherapist and art therapist (UKCP, HCPC), I have worked in NHS secondary care, the voluntary sector and in private practise.
The therapy I offer is a safe, welcoming, reflective space in which you can feel at ease and can explore all aspects of your life. It’s a harbour from the choppy waters of daily life, a place to be heard and understood without judgement. It’s an opportunity to take stock, to make sense of how you got here, to boost your inner resources, to explore possibilities for the future and to implement positive change. I help to structure the process, to provide clarity about what might be impeding you and offer strategies for clearing the way ahead. In addition to talk therapy I also offer the opportunity to use the arts as part of our work.

Oscar Wilde wrote, 'Be yourself, everyone else is taken'. Wise words but sometimes, it can feel too hard and complicated just ‘to be’. Hello, my name is Candida, an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist. I am convinced that much mental distress and profound unhappiness stem from a loss of communication; primarily with ourself. Psychotherapy is about beginning a conversation, an attempt to find sense in the intense, difficult feelings that make life so challenging. Pain needs a voice. It needs to be heard. Yet often words can feel elusive or unsatisfactory. This is where the arts are helpful. This is not about being good at art !

I had extensive training on a variety of therapeutic approaches such as Play-therapy and Art based therapy which now forms part of my work with children.
I am a Psychodynamic Counsellor that works with Children and Young People from ages 3-18 As a Psychodynamic Counsellor I believe that unconscious processes guide our ways of relating to each other. At the centre of my practice is the child’s well-being and safety. I aim to create a safe space for children to feel able to be themselves without judgment, what Winnicott refers as the 'facilitating environment’, where the child’s inner world can be explored.

For children - music and art activities provide non-verbal ways to build resilience, work on communication and relationship skills, and process difficult experiences such as a bereavement.
Creative arts therapy is for adults, children, and babies. As in traditional talk therapy, we’ll use the sessions to form a relationship and focus on areas that have brought you to therapy. In the sessions you'll have the chance to use music or other art activities to share and express your emotions. Sometimes you might choose to use this as a springboard for talking, or it can be a way to explore and process when you’re not ready to verbally process yet.

As every child and young adult is unique, I can integrate aspects of art therapy, talk therapy, attachment theory, play, and the latest clinical thinking on self regulation and self resilience in times of stress.
Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, children & young people can develop fears or worries that may seem at odds with their peers. Often, they will try and manage the best they can, but developmentally this is a big ask. Working with a specialist in this field allows a child or young person to be supported from where they are today - in a way that makes specific sense to them. Sessions seek to help clients to start to process their emotional experiences which may be impacting their ability to thrive.

My therapeutic approach is largely transpersonal integrative, which means I am able to integrate other approaches into my work, including humanistic, CBT, solution-focused and expressive/ art therapy. How I work is entirely dependent on the needs of the client I am working with. Transpersonal therapy is a holistic healing intervention that evolved from the humanistic work of American psychologist Abraham Maslow in the 1960s. I am a registered member of the UKCP, and I work in accordance with their ethical guidelines. I offer both face-to-face sessions as well as online therapy which is accessible to all regardless of location.

As an Arts therapist I work with a particular focus on the persons whole experience; body, mind, and spirit. The expressive arts are a gentle way for you to share your story in alternate ways, sometimes for the first time, expressing your thoughts and feelings using verbal and non-verbal communication. My approach incorporates art forms such as writing, image-making, role-play, and movement, with mindful awareness. By becoming more aware, we start to recognise that we have more choices. This process is a lot less directive than conventional talking therapies, and can offer a refreshing new way of exploring challenging issues.

My clinical approach integrates talking therapies, DBT, mindfulness, trauma work, psychodrama, and creativity, using a range of creative tools, including action, visualisation, imagery, and art .
I work pluralistically from a contemporary biopsychosocial framework that incorporates all aspects of self and I believe that you have many of the answers you are seeking within yourself. My objective is to build a safe and holding space for a trusting relationship where you can explore and share your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and problems/difficulties. Clients often seek therapy because of symptoms affecting their everyday life. However, they are often unaware of the root cause of their self-sabotaging behaviours, relationship issues, and emotional numbness. I also provide a more focused work as a single-session therapy (SST)

Art Psychotherapy uses a mixture of talking and art -making in the sessions.
People start therapy for many different reasons. You may feel dissatisfied, worried or sad, want to explore the past, process difficult events, or achieve goals. By also using art -making, it is possible to explore emotional issues in a different, sometimes deeper way, one that words alone may not allow. You do not need to be an artist to benefit from this, just drawn to the idea of expressing yourself creatively. I have experience of helping with a range of issues, from common life problems, through depression, anxiety, panic attacks, trauma, and experiences of unstable mood.

I've worked for many years supporting people suffering with eating disorders, body image issues, anxiety, depression and various addictions. My extensive experience has shown me that these symptoms are often a response to distressing or painful situations which can come from all areas of life, perhaps difficult relationships, grief or troubling events. I meet each person where they are at and together we work on finding the unique approach and interventions needed. I bring lots of creativity to the space, this might be through using art , images, play or music, but also understand that sometimes just talking might be what you need.

My approach is to offer a safe, contained and confidential space where it is possible to explore thoughts and feelings through art materials within the art therapy space. My way of working is psychodynamic and I combine this with a person centred and non-judgemental practice.

We can talk if that is most comfortable to you, but I also offer Arts Psychotherapy using a number of different art forms to connect with your intuition and inner resources.
Do you feel stuck? Wish for more creativity and to use your full potential instead of feeling held back by your fears? I can support you to tap into your own creative flow and work through fears, negative thought patterns and feelings that might be keeping you stuck. We can learn and harvest the messages your patterns are ready to teach you together. Your difficulties do not have to be your way of life and they do not have to define you. You are worth so much more than your worries and I would love to join you in the journey towards resilience, looking after you and discovering who you really are and what you are capable of!

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
