I have experience of helping those who have faced depression, anxiety, low self-worth; identity issues, drug addiction and anger problems understand how they can be connected to thoughts and feelings that developed in early life.
I am aware that discovering these connections can be overwhelming and recognise the importance of working at your pace to support healthy, lasting and positive outcomes. I am also respectful of individual differences and adapt my approach to suit you; ensuring that you are comfortable and your needs are met.

I have also worked with clients who are in substance recovery.
I offer a space in which I walk together with my client, with full acceptance of their way of being. With this, I firmly believe that clients can find the inner strength in order to cope and change what they want or need. My practice is not neutral. It is relational.

I am an NHS Consultant Psychologist leading a gambling addiction service.
We could all do with help sometimes. I get it. Our world is imperfect and challenging and there is no way to know what life throws next. You may have experienced a loss or trauma and others around you cannot grasp its magnitude. Or you may have resorted to ways of coping that harm you and cannot break free. Or perhaps you are tired of recurrent disappointments, rejections, criticism that have affected how you feel within yourself and your relationships. Forming a genuine connection with each other in therapy will hopefully make it possible for you to work toward changes or make what you cannot change easier to bear.

I have worked with a wide range of issues such as addictions, mens issues, bereavement, relationships, abuse, depression and racial/cultural identity.
Hello there and welcome to my profile. Clients are always welcome to bring any issue to therapy, no matter how big or small they may feel it is and would like support with their issue. They have a desire for change. They've come to therapy because they would like to explore, understand themselves better, their issue and the emotions surrounding it. To process what is or has happened. To make a real lasting impact. I offer a competitive rate because I truly believe that therapy should be as accessible as possible.

It is not uncommon to reach a point in life where you feel you need to reach out for help and talk about what is going on for you in a safe space without the fear of being judged, not being taken seriously and with someone who is trained to help you. It doesn't matter how problematic your life is or what form, or size (small, medium or big) the problems or challenges in your life take, if they are causing you to suffer and be unhappy then I can help you explore them, move forwards and grow at a pace that works for you.

Whether that is presented in feelings of anxiety, depression, sadness, isolation, feelings of not being able to cope, a general feeling of dissatisfaction or relying on external elements such as alcohol or drugs for relief.
I work in a relational way with empathy and non-judgement in order to develop a relationship in which you can explore aspects of your life that may feel challenging.

I am a psychotherapist with 30 years experience of working in addiction.
I work with alcohol and drug dependence and other compulsions as behavioural defences. These defences cause us problems. Our tasks are to stop or control the substance use or compulsion, establish the emotional issues that you are avoiding and help you face them healthily. Similarly, I work with anxiety as a symptom or warning of emotional difficulties.

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
