I hold huge love and commitment in working alongside people to empower them in looking at events in their lives which may have been overwhelming or distressing and can happen to anyone at any time. Sometimes life can leave us feeling stuck, not knowing where to turn. Distressing events can fill us with fear in taking the next step. Feeling confused and overwhelmed can unexpectedly stop us in our tracks. Whatever your challenge, my approach is to offer an honest, trusting relationship within which to accompany you through your difficulties to regain your confidence in finding your way to a better place in life.

Having experienced grief, trauma and other mental health issues, I have an understanding of what it is that you may be going through.
Sometimes we may find ourselves overwhelmed with what life sends our way and we lose confidence in ourselves and abilities. Sessions can be either a one off or a series of events, depending on your needs. As Gandhi said, "Be the change that you want to see."

About me In life, we all face challenges and need someone to support as we go through these difficult times. We may need support for a short time or perhaps longer. I am a qualified integrative counselor which means that I bring a combined approach to our sessions with the thought that there are time when using only one approach, may not meets the client’s need. Drawing on different approaches and styles without comprising the quality of the work or relationship and keeping with the goal of bringing resolution to the client and the situation or challenge they are faced with.

I have a particular interest in working with shame, grief and family trauma.
I originally trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the 1980's and then worked as an actor for many years: over the last 22+ years my life started to take a different turn and I now enjoy working as a counsellor with individual clients. As an Integrative Transpersonal Counsellor I draw together different approaches whilst offering therapy with soul - looking beyond the immediate problem, or symptom to work in ways that honour each client's deeper journey. For me therapy has meant a chance to revisit old stories and beliefs whilst gaining fresh insights and understandings.

I provide general individual counselling and some of my specialties include working with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, past trauma, eating disorders, loss and bereavement.
Each one of us struggles in life at one point or another. When the difficulties in life feel too much to manage on our own, counselling and psychotherapy offer a confidential and safe environment in which we can explore these difficulties and find the direction to lasting changes. Often our current difficulties have their roots in the past. Problems emerge when we stick to our old ways of coping. Counselling can help us make links to the past and find more adaptive ways of coping. It can help us to tune in to our emotions and thus understand what matters the most and what needs to be changed.

My specialism is in supporting people with chronic illness, deep grief and loss.
I also practise outdoors in natural settings, and am a university lecturer (counselling, psychotherapy): therapy is a distinct kind of relational learning experience, which often has a beneficial impact on the way we may relate to ourselves, to others and to the world around us.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
