I offer open-ended psychotherapy for people facing difficulties like anxiety, depression and low mood.
I work in-person in Kennington and Waterloo. I work in a psychoanalytic way, which means that during treatment, once or more per week, I will listen closely and without judgement, following your words to help bring into focus what has been difficult and what the unconscious reasons for these difficulties may be.

Hello, I'm Rachael. There could be many reasons why you’re looking for therapy. It could be due to a particular issue that feels clear to you or a number of issues that are troubling or causing distress; perhaps you’re experiencing a general sense of discontent or unease that’s more difficult to describe. Whatever brings you, I aspire to provide a consistent and safe environment where we can explore what’s most relevant for you and at your pace. If you would like to talk further about sessions, you're very welcome to contact me. Following that, we can arrange an initial session to discuss how you would like to use our time together.

I can help you with sadness, anxiety or if you have experienced trauma.
You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or carrying something heavy that’s hard to put into words. Maybe you’re replaying conversations at night, feeling tense in your chest, or noticing patterns you can’t seem to shift — people‑pleasing, shutting down, overthinking, or feeling disconnected from yourself or others. Therapy offers a calm, steady space to explore what’s happening inside you, make sense of your experiences, and gently move toward feeling more grounded, more understood, and more able to choose what happens next.

Often past experiences, unconscious thoughts and conflicting inner forces can affect our mental well-being in a negative way, causing symptoms such as stress, anxiety, detachment or depression.
I am a fully qualified psychotherapist and hold a masters degree in psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy from Goldsmiths University of London. I offer both open-ended and time-limited treatment to individual adults and couples. I also practice at the Deborah Ubee Trust and I have been running local men’s talking groups for many years.

Essentially, counselling and psychotherapy offers us an opportunity to learn about ourselves. And none more so than when faced with the emotional challenges that are often part of everyday life. At these times we may feel on our own, stuck and unsure of which way to turn. It may also be difficult to find someone we can trust and who will understand, or, in such a busy world, someone who has the time to listen. This is when a counsellor or a psychotherapist can help. I offer a calm, caring, safe, respectful and confidential space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
