Cancer Counselling in Tower Hill
I am an Integrative Counsellor (MBACP) and I work with adults and couples both in-person and online on a wide range of behavioural, emotional, and relationship issues.
Although I am trained in a range of modalities, including person-centred, cognitive, existential and relational approaches, my primary orientation is psychodynamic. I work with clients to gently explore unconscious processes, defence mechanisms, resistance and the dynamics of transference that often shape our relationships and behaviours. My approach is always collaborative and tailored to what feels most helpful for each individual.

Welcome! I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist since 1998 and work as a supervisor too, with practices in Exeter and London and online. I believe that many of our difficulties develop due to our early life and past experiences, including trauma. We repeat patterns in our lives hoping that things will get resolved. Sometimes these patterns are unhelpful to us. Therapy offers, in a confidential and safe space, the possible facilitation of being able to recognise these patterns and approach them from a new perspective. What brings people to psychotherapy is as varied and individual as the people who come. Some have specific concerns, such as anxiety, depression or low mood. Others are navigating significant life events, for example, parenthood, bereavement, illness, caring responsibilities, or divorce. Some want to understand themselves better and find a meaningful narrative for their lives and relationships. Others have noticed repetitions or patterns in their relationships with others, and perhaps with themselves. For some, the reasons for coming are not yet clear, but there is a sense that something warrants exploration or attention.

I work with adults (18+) who look like they are coping on the outside, but inside feel overwhelmed, stuck or unsure of themselves. Many are holding everything together while dealing with anxiety around work, low mood, difficult relationships, family issues or the impact of past experiences.
I help clients understand what is happening beneath these patterns, rather than judging themselves for having them. Together, we explore how past experiences, attachment wounds and relationship dynamics may be shaping the present, so they can build more self-awareness, stronger boundaries and a clearer sense of who they are.

I have extensive experience of working with children and young people in the education and charity sector, although my professional projects include work with refugees, people with SEN, cancer patients, single parents, people who suffer with eating disorders, depression, anxiety, personality disorders and many other areas.
I am a HCPC and BAAT registered Art Psychotherapist. Art Psychotherapy integrates speaking psychotherapy with expression through the art materials. This allows to communicate unconscious information and gives space for whatever might feel difficult to be communicated verbally, to resurface. I use a psychodynamic approach, which focuses on building a trusting client-therapist relationship to process difficult experiences. I facilitate a safe space, where we seek the root of unexplained behaviours and patterns.

There can be times in our lives when we experience distressing events or feelings which seem overwhelming. This can be due to a particular circumstance such as difficulties in our current relationships, work related stress, illness, bereavement, or dealing with painful memories from our childhood. Sometimes we have no idea what is making us feel the way we do. All we know is that life has become distressing, or even intolerable. How does cancer affect mental health?
A cancer diagnosis is a major life event that can significantly influence the mental health of any individual. Being diagnosed with cancer often introduces a sense of uncertainty about the future, which can cause clients to experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and significant distress. Many cancer patients may also worry about the toll that their diagnosis may have on their family, their physical health, their job, and their financial situation. The compounding of such stressors can also decrease mental health in clients and may lead to additional symptoms that can influence mental health, such as sleeping difficulties or social withdrawal.
What is the best psychological therapy for cancer patients?
The best type of psychological therapy for cancer patients is highly dependent on the needs of the individual. The therapy type that a client benefits from may also depend on what stage of the cancer journey they are in. Recently diagnosed cancer patients, for instance, may benefit from therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which can help clients develop skills to manage the emotional distress that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Alternatively, cancer patients further along in their journey may benefit from therapies like Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) or other forms of mindfulness therapy to help manage symptoms or physical pain associated with treatment. Clients may also consider group therapy, which offers cancer patients an opportunity to receive support from other individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis.
Are there any risks or drawbacks in going to therapy while dealing with cancer?
Although attending therapy while dealing with a cancer diagnosis can be helpful, one major concern for cancer patients can be the financial cost of seeking therapy. Many therapists are out-of-network, meaning they do not accept insurance, and thus clients are expected to pay the entirety of the session fee. Since many cancer patients may be out of work as a result of their diagnosis or cancer treatment regimen, the costs of therapy sessions can be substantial. Luckily, many cancer centers and local clinics may offer free or substantially reduced-cost counselling services to cancer patients and their families. In addition, cancer patients may be eligible for grants or other forms of funding from local agencies and nonprofits to seek therapy for their cancer diagnosis. Such opportunities can be very helpful for cancer patients, as they allow clients to obtain the benefits of therapy without the financial strain.
How long does cancer therapy typically last?
The length of cancer therapy depends on the needs of each client. In some cases, cancer patients may only require therapeutic support during the period following their initial diagnosis—to help manage the uncertainty and shock of a cancer diagnosis. In other cases, clients may choose to receive therapy throughout their treatment, and even following, their cancer journey. Pursuing therapy for a longer period of time can help clients develop a deeper relationship with their therapist and provide opportunity to process the challenges presented by cancer treatment, such as physical pain, and challenges associated with cancer survivorship, such as ongoing identity concerns, physical limitations, or relationship challenges.
