Internal Family Systems (IFS) Counselling in Spitalfields

Iwona Drozdz
Psychotherapist, MA, MUKCP
Spitalfields, London E1
I am a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, EMDR, Brainspotting, IFS-trained Practitioner, and a Trauma-Informed Stabilisation Treatment Certified Therapist.
Therapy can be a powerful tool for addressing the effects of trauma and helping individuals heal. The approach to trauma therapy is deeply rooted in creating a safe and supportive environment where healing can unfold at a comfortable pace. Understanding the neurobiological effects of trauma is crucial to effectively implementing trauma-informed practice. This knowledge informs strategies that promote safety, trust, and resilience and prevent re-traumatisation. In my practice, neuroscience is applied to support healing in the aftermath of trauma.

Hello, and a warm welcome. I am a psychosynthesis therapist helping adults navigate anxiety, self-doubt, relationship challenges, and periods of change or inner questioning. Many feel stuck in repeating cycles, or sense there is more to life but aren’t sure how to move forward. I support my clients to create inner space to understand themselves more deeply and make new choices from a more grounded, authentic place within. Together, we explore your experiences and the patterns shaping them, alongside your strengths and emerging identity, so you can live with more clarity, aliveness, and a deeper sense of who you are becoming.

Feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or caught between parts of your life or identity? You don't have to navigate it alone. "We often carry more than one culture, more than one story, and more than one Self." Many of my clients navigate life between cultures — expats, mixed-heritage individuals, and third-culture adults. Others want space to slow down and explore what feels stuck. You might relate if you're feeling anxious, low, stuck, or overwhelmed; you're navigating a life transition or relationship challenge; you feel caught between identities or cultural expectations; or you're curious about psychedelic preparation or integration.

In recent years I have moved my work focus to integrating Internal Family Systems ( IFS) as I find this way of working empowering to the client, engaging and highly effective.
IFS is here to examine the parts of you that hold anxiety, grief, anger, addiction and trauma. It is a way of really getting to know your inner world. It is proven (backed up by neuroscience) and evidence based. It can be sometimes fun, as well as deep and trauma aware. I am happy to work with a number of different disciplines according to your needs.

It’s possible to understand yourself quite well, and still feel completely stuck. You might be carrying something that's hard to name, a sense that your body knows something your mind hasn't caught up with yet. That you've been coping for so long it’s become the only gear you have, or that the life you've built doesn't quite fit. Perhaps you're navigating burnout, questions of identity or sexuality, the weight of your relationships, or something that's never quite had space to be felt. My work starts wherever you are - you don't need the right words or a clear plan to start.

While I work effectively with individuals from all walks of life, I have found a particular calling in supporting males. I recognise that some men may find it challenging to access or express their emotions, and I take pride in creating a space where these feelings can be safely explored. To support this, I often use creative techniques in therapy, such as using art-based activities, which can help uncover and express emotions that may feel difficult to articulate in words.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Counsellors
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
