Psychoanalytic Counselling in Southwark, London

I completed a BSc in psychology and an MSc in occupational psychology before training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
You might feel trapped or grappling with issues that are hard to navigate alone. Finding professional help for figuring out your way can make a difference. Gaining insight into the dynamics of our lives can enable greater freedom, a more authentic existence and inner peace. However, it is important to be aware that this process is a journey not a quick fix. Reaching out for help is the first step even if it is understandably hard to do. I offer a non-judgmental and safe space where you can talk freely about your issues.

I am currently the course leader for the Guild's diploma in psychoanalytic supervision.
Yet I also know, as a long-time meditator, that paying attention in a non-judgemental fashion enables previously unbearable experiences to be borne and new possibilities discovered. I provide a safe space in which these experiences can be explored. I also worked for many years in NHS hospitals and understand the challenges of working in large organisations

Studying Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at the Guild of Psychotherapists and working towards full membership and UKCP accreditation (Ongoing)
Psychoanalysis is a particular type of talking therapy which values the singularity of each individual. Through an in-depth and detailed elaboration of one's experience, it offers a unique opportunity to confront the specific nature of one's suffering. This process is not always easy, however it can lead to the alleviation of difficult symptoms, changes in interpersonal relationships, or even a radical reorientation of one's life.

In the final year of Psychoanalytic Couple Therapy Training in Tavistock Relationships.
Undertaking psychotherapy can be daunting, especially nowadays, when so many different types of therapy are available. It can be overwhelming to make that decision. In my approach, I believe that each situation is unique. Through my experience of working with teenagers and their families, as well as adults in individual and group modalities and couples, I learned to develop a sensitive ear for my client’s needs. We all sometimes struggle due to external or internal pressures or a combination. However, I deeply believe that facing difficulties with compassion and an open mind can be liberating.

Is anxiety draining you? I support people in their 20s and 30s who are tired of overthinking and feeling anxious and are ready for some calm and clarity.
Maybe you appear calm or ‘fine’ to others, but internally you’re feeling stressed and tired. Maybe anxiety gets in the way of what you want or need to do - this may look like procrastinating, struggling to say ‘no’ or what you really mean, or finding it difficult to make decisions because you worry you won’t do things the ‘right’ way. Your usual coping strategies may be to stay busy or just push through without asking for help, but this comes at a cost: you’re likely exhausted.

I work from a place of trying to support people in becoming unstuck and starting to move forward. Everybody comes to therapy with their own unique reasons. This can be due to specific psychological difficulties, such as depression or anxiety, feeling sad, difficult early life experiences, traumatic events, high-stress levels, or a general sense of feeling unfulfilled. I believe every person has a unique story, and psychological therapy should be adjusted appropriately as there is no “one-size-fits-all” in understanding our mental world.

As everyone is unique and dealing with different issues, some much deeper and complex than others, there is no set-time for how long clients are in therapy for, however I find that many come with a wish to explore issues further after having a short course of CBT, which may have only ‘scratched the surface’. Regardless of the length of time, being supported by the right therapist, that works hard to 'get you', in a relationship built on trust, openness, commitment and empathy, can provide increased self-knowledge, self-acceptance, clarity and emotional healing from all manner of mental health issues.

Psychoanalytic Counsellors
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviours. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behaviour is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
