I specialize in working with couples. Whether you’re navigating conflict, rebuilding trust, or feeling disconnected, counselling offers a space for both of you to explore challenges and create meaningful change together. Relationships are complex, shaped by shared history, individual experiences, and the way we respond to one another. Sometimes, uncovering patterns from the past can lead to powerful breakthroughs in the present. I also work with individuals, helping to address a wide range of issues. The act of naming and exploring a challenge in a safe, non-judgmental space can bring relief and open the door to lasting growth.

Hi, I'm Rachel. I am a psychosexual and relationship therapist. I work with people from all backgrounds and walks of life, although most often I work with clients who fall into the category of gender, sexuality or relationship diverse (GSRD), whether that means someone is kinky, polyamorous, a sex worker, queer (or a combination!). I work with people on a wide variety of issues: I see couples who want to work on improving communication in their relationship; I see individuals who are struggling to identify what they want sexually; I see people who want a space to process their feelings more generally.

These are the treatment types I use: person-centered, humanistic and imago.
Life’s challenges can sometimes weigh us down and stop us from being healthy, happy, and successful. Emotional issues such as addictions, anger, anxiety, depression, do not just make us feel bad, but they also jeopardize our futures. Furthermore, problems with families, friends, domestic partners, or spouses can leave us feeling distressed, lonely, and unworthy. Additionally, serious health conditions, financial troubles, loss of loved ones, and other crises can devastate us and make it difficult to get back on track.

With couples I employ the Imago Method, promoting better communication and understanding.
I am a BACP Registered Psychodynamic Therapist, meaning I am trained to help you uncover unconscious processes that may be impacting on your life. Past early developmental experiences and early relationships unknowingly influence our present beliefs and behaviours. Our work will unpack these influences and their impact, supporting positive change.

With couples, I might look at attachment issues, family systems, imago, developmental approaches and explore blocks to intimacy.
I appreciate that there are many reasons why you might be seeking counselling. Maybe your issues have been triggered by recent events. Alternatively, they may stretch far back to past abuse, trauma, or narcissistic control. Problems can surface at work, socially or with family. Perhaps issues feel exacerbated by the particular challenges associated with neurodivergence such as dyslexia, autism (ASD) or ADHD. These are the kinds of issues that I work with. I can help with anxiety, depression, loss, bereavement, low self-esteem, feelings of isolation, exclusion, and deep loneliness, or a sense of being overwhelmed, confused or numb

For couples, the support I offer is through the Imago model of relationship counselling and coaching.
I offer psychotherapy to individuals and couples. With individuals, when we sit together, we begin with whatever you would like to share. If you don’t know what to say, we simply begin with that. You may be going through a crisis, you might need to share your grief, or a gnawing sense of existential unease, or perhaps you simply have a desire to get to know your inner world better. It is all welcome.

How does Imago therapy work?

Imago relationship therapy is a form of couples counseling meant to help partners address conflict, communication problems, and related issues. Imago sessions typically involve couples sitting facing each other and participating in guided conversations. Therapy will also involve exercises such as re-imagining one’s partner as a wounded child; re-romanticising a relationship through appreciation, surprises, and even gift-giving and restructuring frustrations by transforming complaints into requests. The ultimate goal is to re-envision the relationship as a source of safety and happiness.

What is the Imago method?

A core technique of Imago therapy is the Imago dialogue, in which partners learn to avoid hurtful statements and establish ways to interact based on each having equal space and power. In the dialogue, partners take turns as the “sender,” who shares their thoughts, and the “receiver.” The receiver is asked to “mirror,” or paraphrase, what their partner has said, without response or rebuttal, and then validate their statements, acknowledging understanding even if they do not personally agree with it. Finally, the receiver displays empathy by stating what they imagine the other is feeling, and showing appreciation for it.

How long does Imago therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for Imago therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core techniques of Imago coaching, some couples quickly make progress, but most should expect sessions to extend for months, encompassing at least 12 to 20 sessions, along with extensive “homework” from their therapist.

Does Imago therapy work?

There is limited empirical evidence to support the benefits of Imago therapy, but some smaller studies suggest that it does help couples, at least in the short-term. A 2017 study found that marital satisfaction increased significantly after couples completed 12 sessions of Imago therapy, and remained higher for some time after that, but did not always result in “complete recovery.” Other studies found greater empathy and fewer feelings of relationship burnout in couples after therapy. Some research suggests that Imago therapy can aid individuals as well as couples; people with ADHD in particular may benefit from the development of communication, self-control, and listening skills that form the basis of the technique.
