Whist integrating many useful approaches to therapeutic work, such as relational psychodynamic, somatic, and IFS, I work from a black empathic and feminist perspective, which welcomes people of all genders, racial and ethnic identities, and (dis)abilities, recognising that every person's experience must be seen in context of their position in their family, culture, and wider society.
Hi, I'm Karmela at Mixed Emotions Counselling. As a fully qualified and insured counsellor and psychotherapist, I will work with you collaboratively, as a team focused on you, where you are the expert on your life and I provide empathy, challenge, insight and practical strategies. The most important aspect of therapy is that we "click" and feel a connection that allows you to open up and feel safe and understood. Whether you're looking for more clarity in your life, support with life changes, relationships, or managing anxiety or depression, we can work through it together. All identities and orientations are respected and welcome.

Have you ever considered what possibilities could unfold if you gave yourself permission to heal and grow? What it would feel like to give yourself the care and attention you so often give to others. Our early experiences often shape the way we see ourselves, others, and the world. At your own pace, we’ll gently explore how those experiences may still be influencing your life today. Therapy isn’t about “fixing” you because you aren’t broken. Instead, it’s about creating a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported—so you can start untangling the things holding you back and reconnect with a new version of yourself.

Life happens, and the majority of the time we seem to find a way to "happen" with it. We find a way to navigate through the motions of "doing" and get to a place of "being". Being excited, being present, being happy - but sometimes along the way it can get confusing, blurry and we can feel a bit lost. As a certified counsellor, I work with you through the confusion, to get to a place of clarity. I explore the past and present with you using an integrated therapeutic approach - blending the different skills I've learnt in practice to assist you with where you are right now. Many therapists talk about the varying styles of therapy

You may have spent years surviving—keeping your guard up, staying quiet, holding in anger or sadness because you were told to be strong or feared being judged. I work with people who’ve carried shame for too long—shame about what they’ve done, what they’ve been through, or what they had to become to make it through. As a Caribbean woman, I understand the weight of cultural silence, identity struggles, and how it feels to be marginalised or misunderstood in spaces that weren’t made for us. Therapy shouldn’t require you to code-switch, explain your background, or filter your truth. With me, you don’t have to shrink to fit the room

Warm welcome to my profile. My name is Rhys and I am an Integrative therapist and supervisor, helping people find their path to mental health and well-being for over 10 years. My approach is all about working together authentically and collaboratively with my clients, listening to their unique and wonderful stories, and finding solutions that work for them. It's not easy reaching out for help and the fact that you are here I can only imagine has taken you a lot of bravery to show up here which is commendable. I offer a safe space to allow clients the opportunity to explore and reflect deeply in a non-judgemental environment.

I offer compassionate, trauma-informed support for personal growth and healing. I'll support you to not only recognise the ways in which trauma is impacting the ways you relate to yourself and others, but also to uncover new strengths and opportunities for personal growth beyond the challenges you've have faced. I have often found that understanding people's diagnoses and symptoms as responses to what they have lived through is valuable in helping them shed the self-blame they might carry. Often, people find themselves stuck in cycles of behaviour that no longer serve them, yet feel at a loss for how to make meaningful change.

Thank you for stopping by. Seeking help can be challenging; there is the worry if the therapist is the right person for you. If you are strong enough to take a look at what is troubling you, or what may come up as you start to think about things beyond the immediate problem. I offer a space where you can take time to unpack what you have held on to for a while. Or what you may have been surprised by recently. Perhaps your dealing with something that has simply left you feeling overwhelmed? In any case, it may come as no surprise to you, but as you read you have made a start; maybe we can see where this opportunity may lead.

Relationship difficulties, bereavements, life transitions are all things that can catch us off-guard, causing us to question ourselves/our lives and leaving us feeling overwhelmed, scared, numb and struggling to function as we’re used to. Or maybe you don’t feel that anything major has happened, but that something just doesn’t feel right. Many of the people I work with for example, describe themselves as textbook “high achievers” who have accomplished a lot but also carry with them a sense of longing, of life feeling flat or that, despite the successes, they as a person still just aren’t ‘good enough.’

Hello! I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor currently offering in-person and online sessions sessions for adults of colour. Indlela is a Zulu word meaning path or journey but also resource. I believe this word encapsulates the role I play as counsellor. Someone who will accompany you on your journey through the difficulties or concerns that bring you to therapy by offering a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. Through this exploration, we will work to discover and develop the internal resources you need to continue your journey, even once you have left therapy.

As a Black British, why might I wish to see a therapist who is Black British?

Black British clients may seek out Black British therapists for several reasons, foremost being a sense of cultural understanding and the possibility of shared experiences. Cultural sensitivity and context on the part of the therapist may make it easier to form a therapeutic alliance and to focus on the work of therapy without the need to explain or educate a therapist on cultural matters. It may also be empowering to work with a therapist who shares one’s racial or ethnic background. It is important to note that a therapist who demonstrates cultural sensitivity can be highly effective even if they do not share a client’s background or race.

Can clients benefit from working with a therapist who shares their race or ethnicity?

Yes, having a therapist who shares a client’s race or ethnicity is often valuable, especially if it fosters a strong therapeutic alliance between the two. While training, qualifications, and experience are always important, a strong alliance between client and therapist is a major contributor to therapeutic effectiveness. An alliance is likely to be strengthened with a therapist who has an understanding of a client’s background and perhaps also shared life experiences. It should be noted that many clients form a strong bond with their therapist regardless of their race or ethnicity. This is a personal decision, and it depends on the therapist, the client, and the connection between the two.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with Black British clients?

Clients can ask therapists directly about their experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, including with Black British individuals. You may wish to inquire whether a therapist has undertaken training in cultural competence broadly, and how specifically they would ensure that their approach is sensitive to the needs of Black British clients. Therapy involves honesty and trust, so it’s best for clients to share concerns about their therapist’s cultural competence at the outset. And a good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals based on the concerns you articulate.

Why is it important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive?

It’s important for a therapist to be culturally sensitive because everyone comes to therapy with a unique background and set of experiences. Being aware of culture and cultural differences between people is important for understanding clients, as is coming to therapy with an open mind, recognising that the therapist doesn’t necessarily understand everything and that the client can help guide the way.

Who is included in Psychology Today's directory of Black therapists?

The directory of Black therapists includes therapists who have self-identified their ethnicity in their profiles. Psychology Today uses this information to assist clients in finding a therapist who can provide a cultural match. However, not all therapists choose to disclose their ethnicity in their profile, and they may not appear in search results for this reason. In situations where the number of therapists who have identified as Black is limited, the directory will also show therapists who have undergone specific multicultural training or have extensive experience working with clients from relevant cultural backgrounds.
