Everything from work, partners, relationships with family and friends or the lack of these things can bring anxiety, confusion, conflict and trigger feelings of fear, anger, jealousy, or low self-esteem.
I will help you to understand and work towards being able to express yourself from a place of authenticity by identifying the values, beliefs and feelings that you have picked up through life and exploring how your attitudes work for you but also against you, creating tension and keeping you stuck in unhelpful patterns of behaviour.

Many of the people I work with describe feeling stuck in patterns that leave them drained, saying yes when they want to say no, overthinking every little thing or feeling like their mind never switches off. Sometimes it's the opposite, feeling paralysed by indecision, stuck in procrastination and avoidance. Often there can be a background noise of persistent self-doubt or maybe guilt. Therapy might offer an opportunity to understand what’s really going on, not just the symptoms but the patterns, pressures and histories driving them. Sometimes this can be about making changes in our ways of thinking, feeling and behaving.

HCPC accredited Counselling Psychologist offering support in-person and online. Many of the people I work with appear outwardly capable, yet privately struggle with exhaustion, self-doubt and a sense of not being good enough. They are often very self-critical, hold themselves to high standards and feel a pressure to keep everything together, particularly within demanding roles and relationships. Therapy doesn’t need to begin in crisis. Often it starts when something feels off, even though life might look okay from the outside.

I create a safe, non judgemental and empathetic space for you to bring your Anxiety, low self esteem and the story behind your current issues.
Life can get confusing and overwhelming at times. As we are the sum of all of our experiences; at times experiences from the past can contaminate the way we move through the world. Through my capacity to hold emotional pain in the space between us, we can co-create and new way of being. In essence, the safety and empathy I provide clients allows them to be in the Here and Now whilst holding lightly the There and Then.

Whether it’s being caught in endless worries and ‘what ifs’, having painful memories of difficult past experiences, or going through a transition that has you feeling a little lost, life has a way of throwing things at you that increase anxiety, low mood, demotivation and impact relationships. This might affect you physically, increasing stress and tension, disturbing your sleep and appetite or preventing you from living a life that feels aligned with what’s most important to you. At ABODE Therapy, our psychologists provide you with a safe, non-judgemental and encouraging space in which to understand and navigate a way out of this.

Increased self knowledge and insight can be crucial in forming close and authentic relationships with others, often bringing higher self esteem as a result.
My approach to therapy is psychodynamic, drawing from the unconscious processes of the psyche along with looking at how the past can influence the way we act in the present. Many factors from our varying past experiences can form how we deal with situations and difficulties in the present. I aim to provide clarity and awareness, easing the way forward.

If you're dealing with challenges like anxiety, low self-esteem, attachment issues, depression, or trauma, we'll navigate through them together.
I work best with people who feel ready to look inward, even if they feel uncertain, tired, or stuck. They may be adults or young adults navigating life shifts, anxiety, self-doubt, relationship struggles, or feelings that something just isn’t right. They value honesty and want to understand themselves better, not just “fix” things quickly. Most often, they reach out when old ways of coping no longer work. They feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or caught in repeating patterns, searching for calm, clarity, and a way to feel more grounded and true to themselves.

Specialism areas: Couple Relationships (infidelity, communication barriers, emotional reactivity), Anxiety, Self Worth & Self Esteem, Complex Childhood Trauma, Depression.
Therapy can feel daunting at first, yet in my experience it is the most progressive approach to lasting change. It equips you with in-depth understanding and can effectively repair negative patterns to restore connection and support you into building meaningful and lasting change.

People seek counselling and therapy for many reasons, some of which are clear and apparent, such as suffering with low self-esteem, anxiety, or the impact of infidelity in a relationship.
My approach is grounded in my training in relational Transactional Analysis (TA) psychotherapy. This means I am interested in how our past shapes us and continues to do so, perhaps out of awareness, in the present. In addition, TA has a number of tools that can help make sense of painful patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Marcelo integrates Gestalt therapy, Existential Phenomenology and EMDR into his practice, offering an integrative and tailored approach that addresses issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, identity, sexuality, relationships, career transitions, and workplace stress.
Many people come to therapy during times of burnout, loss, identity transition or emotional pain. When we feel stuck, disconnected or overwhelmed, these are often signs that something deeper is asking to be heard. By creating a space where your experience can be reflected on with care and honesty, I aim to support individuals and couples in reconnecting with clarity, agency and meaning in their lives. My work is informed by my doctoral research on occupational burnout in gay men, which explored how gender, sexuality and workplace dynamics shape our emotional wellbeing and burnout recovery.

Self Esteem Counsellors
When should a person seek therapy for low self-esteem?
When self-esteem problems begin to disrupt the healthy daily functioning of an individual, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not engaging with friends for fear of being judged, not completing work assignments because they don’t think they’re capable, or not finding romantic love because they don’t feel they’re worthy of it, a therapist may be able to help.

What are the signs of low self-esteem?
Low self-esteem is a common issue that can affect a person's mental and emotional well-being. Some common signs of low self-esteem include negative self-talk, perfectionism, social anxiety, difficulty making decisions, an inability to set boundaries, people-pleasing, and others. A lack of belief in oneself or one’s abilities and a feeling of not being worthy or deserving underlie most of these characteristics.

What causes low self-esteem?
Feelings of low self-worth can begin in childhood or adulthood. Being raised by a highly critical parent or growing up feeling constant disapproval can stay with a person well into adulthood. Specific issues in adulthood may also be a cause of low self-esteem. An unhappy relationship, a dysfunctional work or school experience can impact a person’s feelings of self-worth.

How can therapy improve self-esteem?
Therapists can help identify negative thought patterns that keep the client stuck in a loop of destructive self-talk and develop coping skills to change the voice in their head. A therapist can help with goal-setting, so that clients are better able to stay on task and build confidence from successfully completing work they’re proud of. Coaching a client on how to better communicate can improve relationships. These skills can result in someone with low self-esteem feeling empowered and living with less fear.
