Many of my clients are thoughtful, capable people who appear to function well on the outside while privately struggling with trauma, anxiety, burnout, grief, relationship difficulties, or a painful sense of disconnection from themselves. Often, the problem is not simply symptoms, but years spent adapting, performing, or surviving. My work is depth-oriented and emotionally engaged. I integrate psychodynamic psychotherapy, EMDR, existential psychology, and cultural understanding to help clients process trauma, understand unconscious patterns, and develop a more authentic and meaningful way of living.

During these difficult times of coronavirus and lockdown, I am offering sessions via the phone, Skype, and FaceTime. They are accepted methods also within the NHS, where I originally learnt to work with them. I am an integrative counsellor/psychotherapist having worked extensively in the NHS but now work privately. My background in the NHS has made me comfortable working within a multicultural context (LGBT and BME) with a very wide age group of clients (18 -90). I have also studied Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and can offer this separately.

Life can often be complex and exploring issues in conversation with another person can be illuminating, providing insight and understanding into how past experiences are influencing current issues. This brings about change in our relationship with ourselves and with others. In our sessions together, you can talk about whatever is on your mind from the present or the past, and bring feelings and thoughts for us to consider. Your trust and sense of safety is important so I will encourage you to move at your own pace.

I believe that it takes courage to reach out and seek the support of a counsellor - I appreciate how difficult getting to this place can be. We are all impacted differently by the world in which we live which can lead to a sense of isolation or 'homelessness' within ourselves. Counselling and Psychotherapy can be seen as an investment in you, an investment that has the potential to bring you from a place of crisis or confusion to one of relief.

I provide psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults who are experiencing difficulties in their lives and who are interested in understanding themselves better on a deeper level. I offer a safe and reliable space to explore how past experiences have shaped how you feel about yourself and about others today. Making sense of the often hidden and unconscious meanings behind your feelings, thoughts and behaviours alleviates distress, and provides an opportunity for deep seated changes personally and emotionally.

No two people arrive at therapy in the same way. I recognise that everyone’s experiences are unique, and I draw on a range of integrative approaches so that our work together feels meaningful and relevant to you. My work is grounded in a person-centred approach, where meaningful change can begin when you feel genuinely heard, accepted and understood. Together, we can create a space where you feel safe to explore what matters most to you and make sense of the challenges you’re facing. As awareness grows, there may be opportunities to respond in ways that feel more authentic and aligned with who you want to be.

I have supported individuals experiencing anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, depression, stress, OCD, panic attacks, trauma, PTSD, childhood abuse, bereavement, loss, sudden or traumatic death, relationship difficulties, addiction, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders, using DBT and other integrative therapeutic approaches.
As an experienced CBT Therapist and Integrative Counsellor/Psychotherapist, I provide a warm, supportive, and non-judgemental space where you can safely explore your thoughts and emotions while working towards lasting positive change. Using an integrative approach, I combine CBT with mindfulness techniques to help you better understand your feelings, behaviours, and thought patterns. Mindfulness helps you step away from “autopilot,” become more present, and face life’s challenges with greater calm, clarity, confidence, and control.

Bipolar Disorder Counsellors
What is the most successful approach to treating bipolar disorder?
Living with bipolar disorder can be challenging, and a number of therapies have been found effective in providing support to patients as they gain the skills to understand and manage the disorder. Family-focused therapy is often helpful for children and teens (the majority of cases develop before age 19); it aims to minimize mood cycling by improving family communication and reducing conflict. It also helps young people navigate the developmental challenges the disorder can create. Cognitive and behavioral therapy (CBT) and variants such as Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)help patients manage the thoughts and feelings that influence bipolar mood swings as well as develop specific behavioral strategies to counteract them.

What happens in therapy for bipolar disorder?
Because the patterns of mood switching and its triggers differ for each person and can change over time, mood tracking or monitoring becomes a basic way patients learn about the nature of their condition. One of the most common features of therapy is finding a workable method of mood monitoring, in which patients track their daily activities and rate their moods, then use the findings to adjust routines accordingly. Patients learn ways of handling the many stresses that arise in life so that they do not trigger mood swings.

What kinds of problems does therapy help with?
Like many other mental health disorders, BPD is heavily influenced by stress; therapy provides skills for coping with stressors of all kinds. Therapy is extremely important for helping individuals identify the situations that may trigger mood switching, so that mood swings can be prevented. Therapy may especially target recognition of the early stages of mood change so that they can be managed. In addition, therapy helps patients deal with the significant amount of turbulence the disorder can create in relationships and in work life.

What is the goal of therapy for bipolar disorder?
Therapy helps patients set up their lives to maintain stability so that their mood isn’t constantly threatened by daily events. Perhaps the first task of therapy is to educate people about the nature of the disorder. At the same time, a primary goal of therapy is to enhance adherence to drug treatment. Extended periods of mood stability can prompt patients to discontinue medication, triggering relapse, while the early phases of manic episodes can feel so energizing that patients stop medication, ushering in full-blown mania and the altered self-perception that can lead to destructive behaviors. Another major goal of therapy is to understand one’s mood patterns so as to minimize both the frequency and intensity of mood cycling.
