I counsel Substance Abuse, Complex Trauma and Addiction related issues. We will talk with the purpose of becoming...... "better than well". Addiction is everywhere, both Substance addiction and Process addiction, and they afflict millions. I deal with many types of addictions and inevitably with the underlying trauma found at their roots. Universally it presents with a kaleidoscope of personal and family suffering. It does not have to continue. Healing from complex trauma and addiction is an act of rebellion. It is the process of deciding that your past—no matter what it has involved —does not get the final say about your future.

Imagine stepping into a space where your worries, stresses, and hidden stories are met with genuine care and curiosity. I’m a Gestalt psychotherapist with a deep-rooted passion for guiding individuals through anxiety, stress, anger, low moods, and relationship challenges. From my own background studying psychotherapy and years of hands-on experience in both private practice and community mental health settings, I’ve learned that transformation often begins with courageous honesty—being willing to name what feels overwhelming and invite connection. There’s another path—one where you don’t have to face these challenges alone.

You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties or a challenging life transition. At times you may feel overwhelmed, stuck in patterns that are hard to change, or unsure how to move forward. Therapy offers a supportive space to explore what may be happening beneath the surface. As an integrative counsellor, I tailor therapy to your individual needs, drawing from psychodynamic, humanistic and solution-focused approaches. I may also use trauma-informed methods such as IEMT and Brainspotting to help process difficult experiences.

I'm Alison, and I’m an integrative Counsellor. I believe that each person has an inherent capacity to heal and grow, and that therapy can offer a supportive and collaborative space to facilitate that process. I will work alongside you to find an approach that best meets your needs — this might involve a structured, solution-focused framework or a more reflective exploration of past experiences and how they influence your present. My practice is LGBTQ+, Neurodivergence-affirming, and trauma-informed. I am trained in Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS UK level 1) and have an interest in Neuroscience and Somatic healing.

I am a psychotherapist and supervisor and have been working with individuals and groups for the last twenty years. For several years I was on the training committee at AGIP including two years as chair. I am currently the course leader for the Guild's diploma in psychoanalytic supervision. I would describe my orientation as psychoanalytic from within a contemplative perspective. By this I mean that I subscribe to the idea of an unconscious and believe events and attitudes from early life can impact on our lives today. I understand that an awareness of these currents helps to increase the choices available to us.

Sometimes you may feel able to talk to trusted family or friends. However, at this moment, a private, secluded space may be what you need if you feel depressed, low, anxious, scared, or hopeless because of a current situation or something that happened in previous relationships. As a result, unwanted thoughts or images keep feeding overwhelming feelings and unwanted behaviours. These feelings, thoughts, and behaviours can feel too difficult to understand, manage, or share with anyone, leaving you feeling alone or misunderstood. I offer privacy and a trusted space where you can share your experiences at your own pace.

I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist working with children and young people, and adults. Prior to being a counsellor and psychotherapist, I worked in education and local authorities, before embarking upon my own intensive personal therapy journey for many years, which transformed my life. I draw upon my life experiences and training, and aim to provide useful insight during sessions. “Human beings have a basic tendency to fulfill their potential, to be positive, forward looking, to grow, improve, and protect their existence.”

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
