My specialties are anxiety disorders, self-esteem issues, and grief.
Whatever the reason that brought you here, I imagine it was not an easy journey. There are times when we feel a sense of estrangement, in the first place from ourselves, which then spills over into our outward-facing life. We might experience dark feelings and thoughts, discover aspects of ourselves that we find disturbing, and end up thinking there is something wrong with us. Through therapy, we look at these aspects of life. Things that are scary when we face them alone become more acceptable when understood together. In time, we can come to realise that life is made of many layers, and that difficult emotions are part of it.

Do you suffer from anxiety?
As human beings we are essentially relational and the exploration of relationships in a person's life is the focus of the work I do. This can be troubling, fascinating, helpful, illuminating and deeply profound or all of these at different times. It is not an easy commitment but then nothing worthwhile ever really is.

Stressed up and anxious?
They have left with their self-esteem restored, and with a deeper understanding of themselves. As a bereavement counsellor I have helped depressed and grieving clients to see the light and find some peace. Being an émigré myself, I understand homesickness and cultural difference. For years I worked in the corporate world and experienced its pressures.

depression, anxiety, addictive tendencies, issues within relationships, unhelpful patterns of relating, and they want to feel better.
I work in a client-led way, which means that I do believe that clients are able to hold the steering wheel of the therapeutic conversation with me assisting them in their journey and discoveries, which inevitably happen along the way. This does not mean that I am not active in the process. I am. And I am interested in the influence of the past on today.

I offer therapy following evidence-based approaches and techniques for individual and couple difficulties, including complex trauma/PTSD, anxiety, addictive/compulsive behaviours, low mood and anything that drains your life.
You may be struggling with a clearly defined issue or general 'stuckness in life'. Maybe you need to understand what it is. You may have experienced it for long or a new difficulty intruding in your life. Possibly something you are keeping from others or maybe someone has suggested you seek help for it. It may affect only you or your relationship with loved ones. Maybe you are seeking help with a couple issue you've tried to work on with your partner. You may feel hopeless, having tried everything to solve it. In any case, therapy can be used to make sense of the situation and think of a strategy to move forward towards your goals.

Stress, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, bereavement, anger, low self-esteem, and loneliness are just some of the reasons why you might want to try psychotherapy.
I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist in private practice, and I welcome anyone who feels that psychotherapy may provide the opportunity to consider their life. It is a collaborative process between the person seeking help and myself. It affords the chance to discover in which direction you might want your life to go.

My experience includes working with: anxiety: panic attacks, chronic worry/intrusive thoughts, low self-esteem, impact of experiencing childhood bullying/violence, relationship/sexuality issues, stress, CPTSD.
Finding the right therapist for you is as much about their style and personality as their qualifications. I value warmth, collaboration, and humour when appropriate and I endeavour to bring these qualities to my practice. My work is integrative which means I can use different theories to suit each individual client's needs. I draw on relational psychoanalysis, attachment theory, Internal Family systems, ACT and humanistic approaches. I am also influenced by my interest in film and literature. I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
