Anxiety around intimacy, relationships, or sexual concerns is incredibly common, and the overarching impact that these issues can have on your health and happiness is often underestimated and undervalued. Forming meaningful and honest connections with people including yourself, and feeling empowered to truly accept and project how you feel - good and bad - is challenging with sex and relationships being no exception. Shedding light on the unconscious and bringing new perspectives to your world can be the seed from which healing and personal development grow.

Seeking therapy is a sign of courage in the depths of conflict. Currently, you may be troubled or overwhelmed, not knowing what is happening either within you, your partner or communicatively between your couple. To be understood and appreciated while conveying the same qualities to another person is an essential component of any satisfying relationship, but it is one that takes an emotional commitment from those involved in finding a resolution. The question I often ask my clients is, "Can you bear the difference of the other, or even tolerate the possibility that they may have a different perspective to the one in your mind?"

I have always been fascinated by the complexity of human beings, their darkness and their lights. I consider the therapeutic room not only as a space for self-reflection and exploration of what feels difficult to process on your own, but also a place to speak the unspeakable. Therapy can provide an opportunity to challenge behaviours that may appear unchangeable or automatic. As a practitioner I am interested in the integration of cultural and gender studies and have experience working with depression, isolation, sexual identity, existential difficulties, relational dilemmas and bereavement.

I have a special interest in helping women with anxiety, imposter syndrome, and low self-esteem.
Are you tired of pretending you’re OK? Are you your own harshest critic? So used to putting others first that it’s hard to hold on to your own self-worth? Or you may be finding that getting out of bed is a struggle, you don't want to go to work or show up in your life. Add in experiences of sexism, micro-aggressions, abuse, and ageism, and your confidence can be knocked. It’s not much fun feeling anxious, depressed or stressed all the time. Comparing yourself to others and not feeling good enough can affect your mood and your relationships with yourself and with others. These are all things that therapy can help you work through.

Our health and wellbeing come from having meaningful and satisfying relationships with others and ourselves, and from being able to come to terms with what is going on in our lives. By understanding and uncovering what is causing us distress, and by getting to know ourselves better, we can feel more empowered and in control of our lives. I really believe that paying attention to our unconscious and being curious about ourselves and our inner lives can help us achieve a more balanced and integrated sense of self.

Female Counsellors
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
