LGBTQ+ Counselling in North West London, London

My clinical and research interests focus on identity, attachment, trauma, and addiction, primarily in LGBTQIA+ communities.
I work with a wide range of clients, however, most clients reach out to me when they are looking to work around relationships, low mood or anxiety, and difficulties in adjusting to change. Overall, my aim is to help my clients gain insight into their struggles and find different ways of thinking, behaving, and feeling about life and their circumstances. Change can sometimes be a painful and intimidating process, but working with someone willing to walk alongside you and help you develop the skills to manage the process can certainly make the therapeutic journey a pleasant and enjoyable one.

I have a wealth of experience in helping clients experiencing depression, grief and loss, LGBTQ+ related issues and relationship problems.
My goal is to help people make a real difference in their lives. Counselling needs to be a safe and supportive environment where people are free to talk about the issues that concern them the most. My approach is calm, to the point and above all honest.

I am a qualified trauma therapist as well as an LGBTQ+ therapist.
An ideal client would be someone with an understanding of how counselling can be used effectively, that said - many discussions with my clients have given me new insights about this and often through these discussions, the client and I can arrive on the same page. Whilst I have a background in trauma training, I do not expect all clients to come with trauma as their reasons for seeking counselling. I am here for you, whatever it is you wish to discuss. My work with clients is open ended, as such - needs and goals can change over time, reviewing our work periodically will help address any change in your desired outcome(s).

I have experience working for a leading mental health charity and bereavement service, a low cost therapy service and 10+ years experience as a helpline volunteer with Switchboard, an LGBTQ+ charity.
I’m Saky: I offer long-term and time-limited therapy.
Something I hold in mind with everyone I work with is their unique identity and how this shapes their experience in the world. What pressures do you face because of who you are and the body you are in? How might you have been treated or (mis)understood by those around you?
I am particularly interested in relationships. I believe that our well-being and sense of self are strongly linked to our relationship to the world around us and the people in it. This includes our parents or the people who raised us, our intimate partners, friends and perhaps the relationships we long for.

I use a number of approaches CBT, DBT, RO-DBT, systemic and behavioural approaches with a professional, but an informal and relaxed manner.

I work most closely with relationship issues, identity/existential crises, depression, and Lgbtqia life.
Patient. Dependable. Approachable. I’m an Irish psychologist and my practice focuses on helping people work through relationship problems. These might be in your intimate relationship, among connections with family, close friends, or colleagues. Or, most importantly, your relationship with yourself. We all carry relational needs - the safety in a sense of belonging, of getting along, of ties that bind, of a sense of home, plans for the future. Our sense of self is reflected back to us through our close relationships. Trouble within them can weigh on our self-esteem, our valuing of ourselves, and eat away at our peace of mind.

LGBTQ+ Counsellors
Do LGBTQ-affirmative therapists receive special training?
Yes. Many therapists who practice LGBTQ-affirmative therapy have completed specialised training, either during their degree programme or as continuing education, to learn the core principles of affirmative therapy and how to best support their LGBTQ clients; some have received certifications in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy. Prospective clients should inquire as to a clinician’s background and training to ensure a good fit.
Why might I want to see an LGBTQ-affirming or LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
Queer and gender-non-conforming individuals frequently experience bias and marginalisation in day-to-day life. Working with a therapist who understands these unique challenges, as well as accepts and affirms their identity, can help LGBTQ clients feel safe and supported during therapy—allowing them to better navigate their relationships, mental health, and anything else that they wish to explore during therapy. It is important to note that many therapists can be effective in their work with LGBTQ+ individuals, even in the absence of specific training or background knowledge. The most important component in therapy is the alliance between therapist and client, and this alliance can exist between individuals with very different backgrounds.
How can I find an LGBTQ-friendly therapist?
You may wish to inquire about a therapist’s expertise with your specific challenges or concerns—depression, for example, or relationship strife—as well as their past experiences treating LGBTQ+ clients. Prospective clients may also ask whether a therapist has obtained additional training and/or certification in LGBTQ-affirmative techniques.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience with LGBTQ issues?
Prospective clients should feel empowered to directly ask therapists whether they have received training or been certified in LGBTQ-affirming therapy; competent therapists will be happy to explain their educational background and preferred approach(es) to help a client find the best match for them. Clients may also wish to ask how a therapist has treated clients with their particular challenges in the past and what they expect treatment to look like.
Are all the therapists listed in the LGBTQ directory themselves members of the LGBTQ community?
While therapists may choose to disclose their sexual orientation or gender identity in their profiles, the LGBTQ directory features not only those who have shared this information but also those who assert specialised training or experience in providing support to queer individuals, couples or families.
