Hi, my name is Marina, and I am a Gestalt Counsellor (MBACP) working at different locations across London, including South West (Clapham), South East (Crystal Palace), central London (St Pancras) and online. The idea of starting therapy can be daunting and finding the right therapist can feel bewildering, especially in moments of fragility and vulnerability. In addition to that, while some clients have a precise idea of what they want to work on, others are not clear about what it is that is not working. In both cases therapy can be a space to set some dedicated time aside with a professional to find perspective and clarity.

Systemic theory views individuals not in isolation but as part of a larger system, such as a family, couple, or organisation.
It's completely normal to face distressing events or feelings that can feel overwhelming, or even intolerable at times. These challenges can stem from various sources, such as relationship difficulties, work-related stress, illness, bereavement, or unknown causes, when the source of distress isn't immediately clear, leaving individuals feeling confused and overwhelmed. In these situations, talking therapy can be a valuable and helpful option.

Having lived and worked in the UK for over 22 years, as well as abroad, I bring a considered understanding of psychological pressures across professional, cultural, and personal contexts. When I start working with a new client, I view it as an exploration. Each individual I meet has a unique story and experience of life. The process of untangling and looking at the different parts in a persons life can be challenging but important if one wants to gain a deeper understanding of oneself and ultimately maybe make some changes? I understand the profound need to be heard and how this can be the catalyst for change. We can carry pain and distress, sometimes for years. Being able to trust a therapist and consequently share these feelings can help us manage our stress and possibly build a healthier life.

I understand every client to be unique in their personality and needs, and that while one therapeutic approach may be very helpful for a particular person, for another it might not be. I aim to provide plenty of space for you to tell your story, placing a greater or lesser emphasis on your childhood, using more or less structured thinking and diagrams, or perhaps trying gentle but effective behavioural techniques. I have helped people with a wide range of difficulties such as stress, feelings of depression, low self-esteem, anxiety (including, phobias and panic attacks) and difficult relationship and workplace problems.

I’m Lloyd, a psychodynamic psychotherapist with a wide range of experience gained in private practice and organizational settings. I offer a calm and reflective space for exploration and growth. Sometimes simply talking in confidence about what is troubling us with an empathic person brings significant relief. Clients I work with come to therapy to make sense of and get relief from emotional pain, which expresses itself in many ways including relationship problems, anxiety, depression and self-harm. I can help you make sense of your difficult experiences, feelings and thoughts and find ways to manage them more healthily.

FAQ - About Family Therapy
What issues does family therapy help with?
Family therapy can help families navigate the complex dynamics of family life, including communication challenges and recurring conflict between family members. A therapist can help family members identify dysfunctional patterns in communication and develop healthier ways of relating. Family therapy may also be helpful during major life transitions or stressful events that affect the family system, such as grief, divorce, trauma, relocation, or a serious illness. In some cases, family therapy can support families coping with specific mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, alcohol or substance use disorders, and eating disorders. In these situations, therapy can provide education and support to family members, as well as to the individual with the mental health diagnosis.

How do I know if my family needs counselling?
Family therapy may be helpful if a family consistently struggles with conflict or communication in a way that affects daily life or relationships. It can also be beneficial when someone in the family is experiencing significant emotional or behavioural changes, such as a family member becoming aggressive, withdrawing, or struggling to cope after a traumatic event. Additionally, some concerns, such as addiction or eating disorders, may be especially important to address in the context of the family unit.

Who attends family counselling sessions?
Family counselling sessions are often attended by members of the immediate family, such as parents, caregivers, children, or siblings. However, other family members may attend when appropriate, including grandparents, stepparents, stepsiblings, or co-parents. Who attends may depend on the family’s needs, the therapist’s recommendations, and the goals of treatment.

Can family therapy be done online?
Family therapy can often be done online. Virtual sessions may be especially convenient when family members live in different locations, have busy schedules, or live in a rural area or part of the country where family therapists are less accessible. However, online therapy may not be the best fit for every family. In-person care may be more appropriate when there are safety concerns, severe conflict, limited privacy at home, or when young children have difficulty engaging through a screen.

What therapeutic approaches are used in family counselling?
Family therapy can take different forms, including systemic family therapy (exploring how individual actions affect the family), structural family therapy (uncovering the structure and relationship dynamics of the family unit), and attachment-based family therapy (focusing on how bonds between family members shape relationships). Family therapy may also include psychoeducation, which helps family members learn more about a mental health condition and how to respond to it more effectively.

How much does family therapy cost and is it covered by insurance?
Family therapy sessions, which typically last about 50 minutes to an hour, often range from around £75 to £150 or more, depending on factors such as location, therapist experience, session length, and practice setting. Family therapy often costs more than individual therapy because it involves multiple participants and more complex treatment planning. The NHS may cover family therapy, but access is often subject to local availability and waiting times. As a result, many families pay privately or use private health insurance or employee assistance benefits, if available. Before starting therapy, it is important to confirm how you will pay for sessions and whether family therapy is covered, which provider types are eligible, whether a referral is required, and whether there are limits on the number of sessions. ****
