We are all influenced by the people in our lives and the experiences we have had both past and present, all of which serve to shape and define us. Sometimes we need help in understanding how the culmination of these factors can get in the way of being able to live life fully and with ease. Maybe you're looking for relief from the pain of anxiety or depression. You could be struggling with life changes or loss. You may want a better relationship with yourself and/or those closest to you. I offer a non-judgemental space in which I can help you to explore your feelings, beliefs and patterns of behaviour.

It is not uncommon to reach a point in life where you feel you need to reach out for help and talk about what is going on for you in a safe space without the fear of being judged, not being taken seriously and with someone who is trained to help you. It doesn't matter how problematic your life is or what form, or size (small, medium or big) the problems or challenges in your life take, if they are causing you to suffer and be unhappy then I can help you explore them, move forwards and grow at a pace that works for you.

I'm Liz, a psychodynamic therapist experienced in supporting people with trauma, addiction and mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.
In psychodynamic therapy, rather than focusing only on what’s happening right now, we can explore how past experiences, relationships, and patterns are shaping how you think and feel. This deeper understanding often brings lasting change, helping you feel more secure, confident and accepting of yourself – more able to cope with life's challenges.

The ways we think, relate, and cope are often developed for good reason earlier in life; the difficulty is that they don’t always translate well into adulthood. Strategies that once helped now get in the way. We often find ourselves repeating the same patterns that adversely impact our relationships, leaving us feeling disconnected from others and ourselves. Therapy is about making sense of that. Not just insight for its own sake, but awareness that leads to change. I can help you understand yourself and your relationship with the world around you, so you can be better equipped to face life’s challenges and gain emotional resilience

When we feel vulnerable, we sometimes look externally to try to feel better, inappropriate relationships, compulsive behaviours, overeating, overspending, drinking and substance misuse, only to feeling further lost and confused.

Initially I worked as a Satellite Counsellor in the NHS, specialising in Addiction, seeing clients with a variety of issues, such Depression, Anxiety, Relationship issues, Identity and Low Self Esteem. I later trained in Hypnotherapy, Rapid Transformational Therapy, Meditation and Relaxation.

Choosing the right therapist can feel like a daunting task. You may be wondering, "How do I choose a therapist?" or "How will I know if you’re the right fit for me?" These are important questions, and I understand how challenging it can be to find the right support. That’s why I aim to ensure we’re a good match before moving forward.
I begin with a complimentary initial phone conversation, which allows us to get acquainted and break the ice. If the connection feels right for both of us, we can then schedule an initial session.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
