Addiction Counselling in North London, London

I have extensive experience working with complex trauma and its sequelae, including personality disorders, substance misuse disorders, and mood disorders (anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder).
You may be seeking therapy for greater self-understanding, symptom relief, or improved relationships. Whatever your goals, we will work collaboratively to bring your thoughts, feelings, and desires into conscious awareness to understand how they impact your relationships and the way you navigate the world. As a therapist, I have a warm, empathic, and direct style. I work primarily from a relational psychodynamic base and weave in CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and compassion-focused techniques to target symptoms, improve the mind-body connection, and enhance overall well-being.

Typically, I work with people struggling with anxiety, despair, anger, and shame; who wrestle with guilt, mistrust, addiction, and dissociation; who are self-critical, self-destructive, and trapped in repeated patterns of hurting self/others.
I offer a warm, nurturing space in which, collaboratively, we can explore and make sense of difficulties you face. As a practitioner psychologist, I recognise that emotional, psychological, behavioural, and relational difficulties usually have multiple causes and therefore different therapeutic methods will be helpful for different people at different times.

I have worked in an inner city special needs and disabilities secondary school, the NHS alcohol and substance misuse services and currently work with REVOKE, a charity meeting the needs of young asylum seekers and refugees.
I work with teenagers and adults who are struggling to live with a loss in their lives. Loss can be that of a person dear to you, a friend, a parent, a partner or a child. It can be your own childhood that has been lost or taken away. Loss can be societal and economic, such as a job, financial stability, your home or displacement from your home environment. It can be physical; the loss of a healthy functioning body and mind or the loss of sexual or gender identity. It can also be spiritual, as in a loss of self, a loss of purpose, of hope, of healthy feelings that allow us to engage with others.

I am particularly interested in working with depression, anxiety disorders, body and/or gender dysphoria, addiction, perfectionism and procrastination, social anxiety, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders and performance anxiety .
In my practice I emphasise the role of focused and undivided attention in identifying and releasing emotional distress and unresolved traumas, while incorporating and bringing awareness to the new aspects of yourself as they present in the work. Eventually helping to materialise the changes you hope for.

Or just caught up in the cycle of life thinking how have I ended up here? AGAIN? NO!
Whatever it is, be it addiction, relationships, parenting- being a dad, or work.
Epictetus asked: “How long are you going to wait before you demand the best of yourself?”
Transformation isn't about what you do, it’s about who you are being, and when we reconnect with our authentic self, we rise above what we must, accept what we can, and move forward with grace.
I want to celebrate what’s already working, and where you are winning!

When we feel vulnerable, we sometimes look externally to try to feel better, inappropriate relationships, compulsive behaviours, overeating, overspending, drinking and substance misuse, only to feeling further lost and confused.
I qualified as a Person Centred Counsellor (PG Dip) 18 years ago. Initially I worked as a Satellite Counsellor in the NHS, specialising in Addiction, seeing clients with a variety of issues, such Depression, Anxiety, Relationship issues, Identity and Low Self Esteem. I later trained in Hypnotherapy, Rapid Transformational Therapy, Meditation and Relaxation.

We are all influenced by the people in our lives and the experiences we have had both past and present, all of which serve to shape and define us. Sometimes we need help in understanding how the culmination of these factors can get in the way of being able to live life fully and with ease. Maybe you're looking for relief from the pain of anxiety or depression. You could be struggling with life changes or loss. You may want a better relationship with yourself and/or those closest to you. I offer a non-judgemental space in which I can help you to explore your feelings, beliefs and patterns of behaviour.

Hello, I'm Matthew (he/him), and if you're grappling with experiences such as addiction, anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem, it's important to know that you're not alone.
Chances are, you want something to change, and facilitating change is what I do. While it can be daunting to accept our self-limiting traits as anything other than horrors to be extinguished, there is ancient wisdom in respecting what dwells in the shadows.

What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.
How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.
How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.
How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
