I see clients individually or in couples, who are suffering from all kinds of
anxiety
and unhappiness,or are feeling lost or stuck. You may be having problems at work, with self-esteem or in your relationship with a partner or friends. You may need to work through trauma, including bullying and relationship loss. If you are a couple, I will help you to analyze what has gone wrong; and have you learn to nurture your relationship by thinking together and working out how to support each other.

I specialise in
anxiety
, depression and men's related issues such as barriers to intimacy and relationship challenges. In psychotherapy sessions I provide a confidential setting that encourages you to reflect on your journey. We will explore the feelings, emotions and impact significant events have had on the way you experience day-to-day life. We will work through your thought process moving towards the version of you that you've always wanted to be. Who is that person? Are they confident in themselves? And most importantly, do they allow themselves to smile, laugh and be happy?

Sometimes life can prove truly relentless. We have all experienced times when several challenges have simultaneously knocked at our door, perhaps when there is already so much we are holding for ourselves and our loved ones. Perhaps you are battling with a lack of meaning and purpose, relationship or work issues, climate grief, addiction. Maybe you feel isolated, lost in a fast-changing world that does not match your values, or stuck in recurring patterns that are no longer serving you. It could be that you are experiencing
anxiety
, depression, anger, suicidal thoughts, and you do not quite know what to do with them.

Our relationships with other people, with ourselves and the world, can sometimes feel challenging; even overwhelming at times. While personality,
anxiety
, depression, relationships and emotional trauma remain areas of expertise, I am experienced in working with people who want to engage in therapy to think about themselves more deeply, and to understand and relate to themselves and others better. In the NHS I have treated mental health issues ranging from mild emotional challenges to complex psychological issues. In therapy, I tailor my approach to meet the needs of the individual, and adapt the work as those needs change over time.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
