Internal Family Systems (IFS) Counselling in Kennington
I’m Sam - I have around 12 years of experience as a psychotherapist and I work predominately with men. I became a therapist because I had been in therapy for years myself and it really helped, and so I wanted to support others in the same way. I’m Scottish living in Central London, a gay man and I work with people of any gender or sexual orientation - I have a wide mix of clients, some straight, some gay, some people of colour, some white, cisgender, non binary and all letters of the alphabet. My style is warm, non-judgmental, empathic and challenging when appropriate!

Whist integrating many useful approaches to therapeutic work, such as relational psychodynamic, somatic, and IFS, I work from a black empathic and feminist perspective, which welcomes people of all genders, racial and ethnic identities, and (dis)abilities, recognising that every person's experience must be seen in context of their position in their family, culture, and wider society.
Hi, I'm Karmela, a counsellor and psychotherapist working in N12 9EH, SW1V 3SG, and SW7 4TE and online. As a fully qualified and insured practitioner, I work with you collaboratively, as a team focused on you, where you are the expert on your life and I provide empathy, challenge, insight and practical strategies. The most important aspect of therapy is that we "click" and feel a connection that allows you to open up and feel safe and understood. Whether you're looking for more clarity in your life, support with life changes, relationships, managing anxiety or depression, or exploring your identity we can work through it together.

Does it feel like life should somehow be working better than this? Perhaps you feel stuck in patterns that keep repeating, overwhelmed by stress or change, burnt out from holding everything together, or exhausted by trying so hard for things that still do not feel right.
I work with people navigating anxiety, burnout, relationships, loss, life transitions, and neurodivergence, especially Autism, ADHD, and AuDHD. Together, we untangle what is happening, process difficult feelings, explore patterns and perspectives, and make practical changes to help life feel calmer, clearer, more meaningful, and more fully your own.

I offer integrative psychotherapy ( IFS, ACT, REBT, CBT, etc.) for adults experiencing anxiety, trauma, relationship difficulties, addiction/compulsive behaviours & have particular experience working with neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ clients.
Most of my clients are neurodivergent and/or queer and want to explore what that means for them with someone who understands. Are you living with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or the impact of past experiences that still affect how safe you feel in relationships? Maybe you struggle with low self-esteem, overthinking, trauma responses, or patterns linked to neurodivergence such as burnout or masking? Some clients come questioning their identity, sexuality, or sense of self; others feel stuck using coping behaviours that no longer help. You don’t need a diagnosis, just the sense that something needs understanding.

I've completed specialist training in trauma, IFS, and pregnancy and infant loss.
People often come to me feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or lost. You might be grieving, or carrying a quiet sadness, anxiety, or sense of numbness. Some clients say they feel stuck, unsure of who they are or what they want. Others are moving through a breakup, burnout, pet loss, or a major life shift. It’s not always easy to name what hurts, only that something feels off, or missing. Often, there’s a longing to feel more grounded, emotionally steady, and alive again. Therapy with me offers a calm, steady space to pause, breathe, reflect, and gently come back to yourself.

Certain life events, transitions, or longstanding struggles can cause our usual ways of coping to break down, leaving us feeling overwhelmed and extremely distressed. To continue to function, drugs, alcohol, food, self harm, sex, social media, a depressive state or abusive behaviour can be used to numb the distress or stand in for what feels missing. But this often leads to feelings of guilt, shame, anger or blame – whether of oneself or others. It can feel like being trapped in a loop of unsatisfactory or harmful relationships, or like reaching a dead-end, with confusion about finding a meaningful path ahead.

If you're used to carrying a lot on your own, you may find it difficult to ask for support or make space for your own needs. From the outside, you may seem to be coping, while inside you feel anxious, overwhelmed, low in confidence, disconnected from yourself, or struggling in your relationships.
People often come to work with me when something in their life is changing, following a loss, relationship difficulties, challenges at work, starting somewhere new, or questioning identity and belonging. Together, we can make sense of your experience, explore the patterns that have shaped you and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Counsellors
What is Internal Family Systems therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.
How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.
Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?
IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.
How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
