Trauma and PTSD Counselling in East London, London
Hello, my name is Jodie. I am a Senior Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years experience working within the NHS, private and charity sectors. I specialise in work with adults and young people and really work hard to ensure each of my clients is offered thoughtful and individualised care. Life can be hard and I believe that everyone could benefit from therapy at a number of points in their life, not just at the point of mental health crisis. People often come to see me at a time of change, life transition or when there is a difficult decision to be made in their lives. Alternatively, people might reach out when feeling stuck.

Areas of special interest include: trauma, existential concerns, and depression.
I believe that therapy allows you to take a more active role in understanding and experiencing your emotions. When we are not aware of our emotions or ideas, it can mean we act out certain behaviours – or experience certain feelings - without knowing why. And while we might be able to tolerate this for some time – perhaps even for a long time - I believe there is a difference between surviving and living. Developing a closer – or less mysterious - relationship with ourselves can allow us to go beyond living life passively and begin to really experience it.

Alongside my private practice, I work as a Clinical Psychologist in the NHS and as a lecturer and researcher in academia, where I study adult mental health and childhood trauma.
People come to therapy for different reasons, and having a space to reflect, share, experience difficult or confusing feelings is in itself a big part of psychotherapy. In our sessions, we will explore the reasons that brought you to therapy and identify or develop goals, exploratory or specific, that will guide the focus of our work together.

I have been working as a qualified therapist in London for over two decades offering evidence based therapies. My roles within the NHS have been both clinical and managerial and offering both one to one and group therapy. I work with clients presenting with a wide range of difficulties who wish to develop self awareness, make changes and build resilience. For many, these difficulties may appear as a dip in mood, feeling stuck, or an increase in anxiety. For others, they may feel lost, overwhelmed, or experience a lack of purpose.

I am committed to being identity-affirming, culturally inclusive and trauma-informed.
The step to take therapy can be a daunting process, but you are not alone. Therapy is a gradual co-created process that you can take your time with, with support and encouragement. This time of year, you may be feeling a sense of hopelessness, stuck or longing but unsure of what direction to take. My approach explores patterns that may be rooted in the past, bringing more awareness to our way of being, how we view the world and how we might make meaningful changes.

I am a body-oriented, trauma-informed therapist.
Often we reach places in our life where we begin to notice that we are caught in patterns that no longer serve us or make sense for where we see our life going. Sometimes we notice our relationships with ourselves and others are out of sync, disconnected in some way. You might feel like you are carrying a burden, feel trapped and somewhat alone in these difficult to understand feelings. Sometimes a quiet knowing emerges, gently urging us to look within, which knows that we don’t want to do this alone. This inner exploration can feel deeply vulnerable but I see it as essential if we want to create meaningful changes that truly last.

I have over ten years of practise with adults, children, and young people experiencing trauma, anxiety, low mood, depression, phobias, emotional problems, relationship struggles, loss, and life changes including health diagnoses.
It's normal to need support with our mental health and wellbeing. Sometimes we need help to feel more at ease in a specific area of our lives, or perhaps to explore why we feel the way we do. Whatever your hopes are for therapy, I strive to create a safe and supportive space tailored for you. I am a Clinical Psychologist, which means I am trained to support people with different hopes, needs, and difficulties, by using a wide range of therapies. I work by first understanding more about you and what has brought you to therapy, before agreeing on a therapeutic approach which will best suit your individual needs.

I offer trauma-informed therapy for adults navigating life transitions, emotional challenges, and exploring questions of identity and meaning.
As a counsellor, I facilitate a welcoming space that supports awareness of moment-by-moment experience, recognising how unresolved issues show up in the here and now.
Alongside indoor sessions, I offer walking therapy. Many people find that being outside fosters a more equal and spontaneous way of relating, with nature becoming part of the process.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
