Change often begins in the space where you’re allowed to speak freely. I’m a psychodynamic psychotherapist offering one-to-one therapy for adults, both in person and online. Some people come to therapy wanting short-term, focused support around a specific issue, while others seek longer-term, open-ended work. We’ll shape the therapy around you and your needs, rather than forcing a fixed model. My approach is relational and collaborative. We work together in a confidential, non-judgemental space to explore thoughts, feelings, relationships, and recurring patterns, at a pace that feels manageable and attuned to you.

My work includes one to one and couples therapy. Face to face is preferred, but I can also offer sessions via phone or online. Working together, we can explore your felt thoughts, feelings and emotions that may be prompting behaviours/ reactions that impact your everyday. Additionally, we can work to seek clarity, and sometimes even acceptance around specific situations. Exploring issues that seem a little overwhelming, with the goal of giving you back that sense of control you may have felt you’ve lost.

Hi, my name is Gordon. Welcome! I am a full qualified therapist working online and in person from my consulting room in Manchester zone one. Personal therapy helped me to untangle my relationship with myself and my emotions from others. The world alone is a chaotic place to manage our own unknowns, anxieties, and traumas. I understand that everyone experiences the world in different ways, so unique problems require bespoke responses. Our lives are constantly changing, so it’s natural to feel emotions strongly, think differently and respond atypically. I help clients explore all spheres of their life to help build hope and cope

People seek therapy when they are dissatisfied or unhappy and feel that it is possible to make changes but this is very difficult alone. Psychotherapy is a particular type of conversation exploring thoughts, feelings and relationships. Psychotherapy offers the opportunity to think about what is troubling in a safe setting to understand and improve relationships, both with ourselves and others. My thinking and approach places relationships at the heart of experience. When patterns in relationships can be understood we can feel liberated to change.

Whether you're feeling anxious, depressed or feel that relationships aren't working for you, I can work with you to build a deeper understanding of yourself to be able to form the relationships you value and to authentically meet your goals. I have experience in helping clients through feelings of suicidality, despair and through complex traumas. If you choose to use the Arts alongside talking therapy, this can mean creating a more symbiotic relationship between left brain and right brain activity to create compassion and release from painful emotions and the seemingly inescapable hold of traumatic events.

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and hard to handle. I provide a space to talk through the things that are making you feel anxious, sad, stressed or perhaps a bit lost. Setting aside time to focus on yourself and talk about the things that are causing you distress can really help to bring new perspectives and ease some of the anxieties that can hold you back from living in a happy and fulfilled way. I aim to work with you through some of these things to help bring clarity and insight, which in turn can help improve how you feel day to day and allow you to take charge of who you are and how you navigate the world.

I have always been fascinated by the complexity of human beings, their darkness and their lights. I consider the therapeutic room not only as a space for self-reflection and exploration of what feels difficult to process on your own, but also a place to speak the unspeakable. Therapy can provide an opportunity to challenge behaviours that may appear unchangeable or automatic. As a practitioner I am interested in the integration of cultural and gender studies and have experience working with depression, isolation, sexual identity, existential difficulties, relational dilemmas and bereavement.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
