In my private practice and as a college school counsellor my clients often face stress, anxiety , and sometimes anger. This may lead to experiencing sadness, feeling despaired, alone, worthless. Life can bring us hardships, many of which may develop into anxiety and unwanted behaviour or attitudes as a result of difficult circumstances. I work with my clients to help them make sense of their difficulties and foster acceptance within. I provide an empathic and non-judgmental space in which we will work together towards your mental wellbeing and peace of mind. I offer a mindful approach to counselling tailored to each situation.

My name is Erika Mancini. I am a Relational Transactional Analysis Psychotherapist and a Certified Transactional Analyst. I work with individuals and couples presenting with a wide range of psychological and emotional issues with a particular focus on trauma, anxiety and relationships. I believe we are all shaped by the relationships we experienced while growing up and that we develop from them the ways we relate to ourselves, to others and form relationships in adult life. Sometimes this can result in adaptations or coping mechanisms that may prevent us from becoming who we really are.

I know that sometimes taking the first step to seek help may seem like a huge task. Having a confidential space, free of judgement can help you. The thought that no one else can understand how it feels can be paralysing. The feeling that others will judge before helping you may lead you to think that there is no one trustworthy enough. I offer short and long-term therapy. A place to explore your thoughts and feelings and how they impact on their relationships. I am experienced in working with clients suffering with anxiety , depression, trauma, panic attacks, relationship difficulties, bereavement and issues with self-esteem.

Is undealt anxiety spoiling your daily life? Going through problems alone can be challenging at times and therapy can offer a new perspective into opportunities for personal growth and in-depth self-discovery, handling difficult thoughts, feelings, and belief systems that we may find too complicated to discuss with loved ones? My role as a therapist is to help you understand yourself better. In the sessions, I create a safe, confidential and non-judgemental setting in which you may explore and freely express your current and past difficulties that may be causing feelings of ‘stuck-ness’ or difficulty to move forward in your life.

Having mental health needs is a challenge for anybody. Unfortunately, more and more individuals are suffering from mental ill health despite various programmes and access to psychological therapies. Most common problems I have seen and dealt with are anxiety and depression. Anxiety forms the basis of many mental disorders. My clients approach me to help them deal with their anxiety and low mood as it has become so debilitating they they are not able to function well in the society and they struggle to carry out their day to day tasks.

I work with people looking to overcome a range of emotional difficulties and common mental health challenges, such as: anxiety , depression, stress or overwhelm, stuckness, low self-esteem, bereavement and loss, trauma, relationship issues, life changes or crises.
Asking for help can feel daunting. Finding the help you need can feel like an overwhelming task - especially if you feel low, anxious, or desperate. Maybe a particular event, crisis, or relationship has brought you here. Maybe you don't have a clear reason but feel frustrated or despondent or simply sense that something is 'off'. Whether you feel your difficulties are specific or vague, together we can look at what brings you to therapy and what needs to change so that life is more manageable.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
