I am most often consulted by people who have anxiety or depression. Modern life can be stressful and many people seek my help with stress and stress-related health conditions. I am frequently consulted for help with relationship problems. In recent years I have seen an increase in the number of people who are seeking help with alcohol, food and eating disorders. Many people come because their life is not working the way they want it to, and they feel stuck and unable to move forward.

Stuck, confused, overwhelmed, anxious or depressed? Struggling with a relationship, bereavement, job loss, parenthood, or parents? Perhaps you don’t know your exact problem, only that something isn’t right. My role is to help clients explore their issues, gain insight, clarity and understanding, then support them as they move towards change. Working together, we explore where they are now, how they got there, where they’d prefer to be, and how they might do things differently.

Typically, I work with people struggling with anxiety, despair, anger, and shame; who wrestle with guilt, mistrust, addiction, and dissociation; who are self-critical, self-destructive, and trapped in repeated patterns of hurting self/others. Such feelings, behaviours, and patterns of relating often stem from multiple, complex life events and circumstances, including past/present abusive and neglectful relationships, discrimination, bereavement, trauma, gender expectations, parenthood, study/work/financial pressures, and more existential challenges such as one's relationship to meaning, responsibility, authenticity, and mortality.

With so many counselling profiles to go through it can feel difficult to know which counsellor will be able to help you with your struggles. Will a male counsellor best serve me? Would there be benefits to seeing a female counsellor? What does a Psychodynamic Counsellor offer over a CBT Counsellor? If you are seeking counselling and struggling with these questions, please email me and I will be happy to offer a free 15-minute Zoom session to share some of my experience with you and help you find the right counsellor, whether that be myself or another professional.

Hello and welcome! I'm Laurie, an Integratively trained therapist. You might have heard this term but aren't quite sure what it means or how it could benefit you. Let me clarify: Being integratively trained means I've studied various therapeutic approaches, allowing me to tailor our work together to best suit your needs. I don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach because no person is the same. So, we'll start by exploring what you feel might work best for you. If you've had therapy before that wasn't effective, we'll delve into why and If this is your first time, we'll discuss how I can best help with my skills and experience.

Male Counsellors
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
