It is natural to feel lost or confused when facing emotional difficulties, such as the ending of a relationship, when going through big change or you are feeling overwhelmed by past events. You are not alone if you are experiencing anxiety, unhelpful behaviours or you are feeling isolated. These are human experiences that we can all go through. Psychotherapy provides a calm and non-judgemental space where you can reflect, explore and deal with the difficulties in your life.

Hello, I'm Emily - a modern, down-to-earth, integrative psychotherapist based in London and online. I specialise in working with Gen Y, Gen Z and the LGBTQ+ community. Sometimes I work within quite specific areas, including anxiety, burnout, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, family dynamics, identity, and LGBTQ+ issues. At other times, people come to see me with a general sense of just wanting to feel more comfortable within themselves and their life - not because something in particular is 'wrong', but because they want things to feel more 'right'. Whatever it is that you want to explore in therapy, I will listen to you.

Whether you feel you are in crisis or just want to get to grips with thoughts and feelings that may be disturbing you, I can help. You might feel anxiety, depression, anger or shame. You might be having relationship problems or going through big changes in your life like the loss of a loved one or a job that have a big impact on you and you need help to cope with. Or there may be something inside you that you have lived with for some time and that gets in the way and prevents you from leading a fuller and happier life.

Life can sometimes be so complex and difficult that we do not always feel able to sort it out and get back to feeling "normal again". The complexity of life and the hardships that some people have to endure has always fascinated me, and having experienced many personal losses and life changing events myself, my passion has grown, and I would like the opportunity to "make a difference" and support those when it is most needed. Working in my current work environments I understand how the demands of daily life and major life events such as a Bereavement, Domestic Violence, Physical/Sexual abuse or divorce can leave us feeling.

I'm an integrative counsellor, which means that I don't believe there is a one size fits all approach when it comes to therapy. So whether you prefer structured CBT or to express yourself through the arts I will tailor therapy according to your needs. I have years of experience working with both women, survivors of abuse and young people, having worked for respected charities like Women's Aid, NSPCC and The National Domestic Violence Helpline. I have a good understanding of the issues that effect these groups, and I feel passionate about enabling both to have their voices heard.

Fear, anxiety, grief, loss and traumatic experiences can get in the way of self-acceptance and self-compassion. Without this, it is difficult to move forward with life and live well in the here and now. I work with clients to live well, whatever their circumstances and however they define living well. Our work together motivates changes in perspective, which leads to changes in feelings, thoughts, choices and behaviour. Although it is not a linear trajectory these changes can and do happen, with the right support, even in the most challenging of circumstances.

Alcohol Use Counsellors

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
