Matt is a nationally recognised expert in child behavioural problems, attachment and parenting as well as the mental health needs of adopted, fostered and care experienced children.
Matt is especially interested in the way in which child factors contribute to parenting challenges and how evidence-based approaches can be modified to take these into account. While standard evidence-based parenting programs work well for many families, research shows a failure to assess child factors can undermine their effectiveness for some families.

I am a fully qualified psychotherapist working with adults in both private practice and the NHS. Although I have a practice in London I am currently working entirely via VC and able to take on new clients. I work largely in the psychodynamic model but always remain flexible to offer the best possible help. I encourage open-ended therapy for the most opportunity for change, growth, and support but also I am happy to offer time-limited/short-term therapy if that is what might suit you better. I am registered with all the major private healthcare providers should you wish to apply via them. Please see my website for more details

By talking together, and attending to the creative ways the body and mind has offered protection from this, within the culture we live in, we will develop an understanding and find new ways to move forward in life (Please note: I only work with teens if parents also agree to engage in parent work alongside).
Thank you for your interest! I am an experienced Consultant Clinical Psychologist and I have worked in mental health services in the NHS for over 25 years. I have a particular skill in working collaboratively with people whilst keeping them connected to the important contexts of their lives, whether that is their partner, children, family, work or the values and beliefs which guide them. I think it is important to acknowledge the impact of intergenerational strengths & trauma as well as attending to community resources & adversities given the powerful effect these can have in shaping our lives.

My work is dedicated to helping individuals understand how their past experiences and unconscious thoughts powerfully shape their present-day emotions, behaviours, and relationship patterns. We are often influenced by feelings and motivations outside of our immediate awareness, which can lead to recurring difficulties, emotional distress, and a sense of being stuck.

I'm available to support you in your process of self actualisation by providing a safe space to explore, acknowledge and begin to process the challenges that are creating tension between your self concept (how you see, feel and experience things now) and ideal self (where you want to be). The direction of each session will be defined by you without pressure or expectation. I have experience of working with clients who have encountered significant trauma, grief and/or have been medically diagnosed with a range of mental health challenges. Maybe this is you, or maybe you’re just feeling a bit stuck in your current situation.

I have particular understanding of anxiety, parenting and ADHD, but whatever brings you here, we can begin with what feels difficult now.
You might be holding things together on the surface while underneath things feel much harder. Perhaps you are anxious, low, overwhelmed, numb, angry, disconnected, or unable to switch off. You might be overthinking everything, struggling in relationships, feeling not good enough, or finding yourself caught in patterns you do not fully understand. It can be exhausting when so much of your energy goes into getting through the day, managing other people’s expectations, second-guessing yourself, or keeping difficult feelings out of sight. This can be a very lonely place.

I am a BACP registered integrative therapist using a variety of approaches depending on the needs of each client. My approach is collaborative, practical and personal. I believe that human beings are naturally resilient and have an incredible capacity for change in the right supportive environment. We are often held back by our limiting core beliefs and by bringing awareness to our repeated patterns of behaviour, we can identify areas where we are “stuck” and are held there by our core beliefs. My aim is to help clients make space for new possibilities and new ways of being by challenging these limiting core beliefs together.

Life, what's it all about? It can bring unexpected joy and/or unwanted challenges. However, we know that those challenges which create psychological and physical strains can preoccupy us the most. As a counsellor, I have a longstanding interest in supporting children, young people and adults who are going through difficult times. I will listen and engage with empathy, thereby making easier for you to feel safe as you share your thoughts and experiences.

Parenting Counsellors
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
