I have worked in a variety of NHS settings including; The National and Specialist Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Service for Children and Young People, HIV and Sexual Health and Infant and Maternal Mental Health.
I am an experienced Chartered Clinical Psychologist trained in a variety of therapeutic models and approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focussed Therapy (CFT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprogramming (EMDR). My therapeutic style is integrative which means I use a range of therapeutic approaches depending on client needs and preferences, so I tend not to stick rigidly to a one size fits all way of working. This allows me to be flexible and client-centred no matter who I am working with.

With over 15 years experience, every single client I worked with was ideal to me, as being unique, with his/her story, difficulties, weaknesses but also strengths. At times clients come to therapy with a specific goal, other times they do not have a clue, and this is part of the process. If a client is now reading my profile, he/she may be struggling with a recent or more long-standing emotional distress, not able to sleep, concentrate, work, relate to others, etc. He/she may be worrying about what to say to a psychologist; what to expect; possibly fearful of being judged, not understood; if the psychologist would be good enough...

I support a broad range of concerns, particularly anxiety (racing thoughts, tension, a sense of foreboding), OCD (intrusive thoughts, compulsions, confusing rituals), and low self-esteem (self-criticism, people-pleasing, feeling undervalued).
I work with the whole person -thoughts, emotions, behaviours & creative expression. This may include exploring early life patterns, new ways relating to emotions & approaches such as CBT & imagination-based work. Therapy is collaborative, adapted to you & supports reconnection with who you are beyond the problem, bringing more choice, steadiness & self-trust

I find that most clients are struggling because they lack coping strategies to manage distress, but also often because they are out of touch with what is important to them, their values, their strengths, their preferred life directions, and there are barriers such as anxiety, fear and/or emotional discomfort which lead to avoidance and other unhelpful behaviours. In turn, these factors thwart their goals and increase distress. Clients want reduced distress and increased pleasure and engagement with a life in which they can feel confident and empowered.

Therapy that leads somewhere. It’s our relationships that make the difference. People who work with me build a relationship that supports lasting and meaningful change in their life. You might be coming to therapy feeling frustrated that you’ve not been able to fix things on your own. Maybe you have talked, reflected, read, and processed, yet the same patterns keep showing up. Working with me allows you to gain perspectives you cannot get on your own, and the support to shift unwanted patterns and dynamics. Warmth matters, but so does direction.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Counsellors
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, and sertraline, among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
