Hello! My name is Carmen and I am working as a private practitioner. I worked before in schools, drug and alcohol rehab and occupational health (EAP and assessments). I'll work with you in a way that will enable you to discover yourself, maybe the difficulty which probably causes you distress, increase your motivation and hopefully change your life in better. We can talk about what it is happening now but also we can address aspects from your past which are just on 'pause' at the minute but they 'creep' out whenever they want. Usually my sessions are based on your needs, purpose and action.

I work with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds who are navigating difficult life experiences, pregnancy and motherhood, parenting pressures, separation, grief, anxiety, depression, identity questions, or the quiet struggles of trying to "fit in" while staying true to oneself.
Maybe you're trying to hold everything together while feeling disconnected from yourself. Perhaps you’ve spent so long taking care of others that you’ve lost sight of your own needs. You may be struggling with low self-esteem, people-pleasing, or feeling stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. You're not alone, and don’t have to figure it out alone. My approach is culturally sensitive. I create a space where you can speak freely without judgment or the need to explain your background. I also integrate tools from CBT, compassion-focused therapy, and trauma-informed care to support your goals at your pace.

With 16 years of experience in various adult social care settings, and current work at the pregnancy loss charity Cradle, caring is at my core.
You may be feeling a constant sense of dread or unease, hopelessness, guilt-ridden, or feel isolated, like no one understands. This can be all-consuming and affect every area of your life. That rollercoaster of emotions, emptiness that struggles to process anything. You want a therapist to understand with an understanding of anxiety and depression, to hear what has happened to you, and feel safe to explore your feelings freely.

I also have experience supporting parents who are carrying the impact of difficult birth experiences, fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, or other significant emotional events.
I use therapeutic models such as Compassion-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. My clinical work is formulation-driven which means that I spend time getting to know your experiences, and what meaning you make of them. Then, we can bring in different aspects of each model, depending on what works for you.

We all experience difficult times in our lives, suffering anxiety, depression, stress, anger, relationship issues, grief, bereavement, physical illness, emotional/physical abuse, low mood, and low motivation, to name just a few of the reasons people come to therapy. At times we will feel like we don’t want to ‘burden’ people with how we feel so we try to push through and carry on, we try to pretend all is ok, we try and cope by putting on a smile and a brave face, often we simply find we are unable to move forward and feel stuck.

Pregnancy, Prenatal, Postpartum Counsellors

What are the most effective ways to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns?

The most effective way to address pregnancy, prenatal, and postpartum concerns is by finding a therapist who has prior experience helping other patients overcome the challenge being faced. For example, a marriage and family therapist may have experience helping couples adjust to their new relationship dynamic. An anxiety specialist may have experience helping with phobias or illness anxiety related to the child’s health. A depression specialist may have experience treating postpartum depression.

When should I seek treatment for prenatal or postpartum concerns?

Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve intense physical and mental changes; a degree of upset and instability is normal. However, if these changes impair daily functioning, it may be time to seek help. This distinction is pertinent for postpartum depression: A period of teariness, irritability, and distress is difficult but normal in the one to two weeks after childbirth (sometimes called the “baby blues.”) But if feelings of sadness and hopelessness persist beyond that period, the person should seek treatment.

How do I manage worries during pregnancy or the postnatal period?

A therapist can help patients develop the tools they need to manage anxieties during or after pregnancy. Cognitive behavioural therapy can help people identify and reframe harmful patterns of thought, and change their behaviours. Other techniques and skills can allow people to develop acceptance, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, communication skills, and more.
