I am passionate about trauma informed practice: making every effort to understand the impact of people’s lived experiences on their daily lives. My approach is based on psychological formulation, to make sense of what a person is experiencing, and then using a range of integrated approaches to help people to make changes. I care about empowering individuals to live the lives they want to live, and take a very human and empathic approach to working with people's distress.

I aim to offer a professional yet down to earth relationship in which you can explore your personal difficulties whatever they may be. Sessions are offered weekly or fortnightly, usually in an open ended way until you're feeling more like yourself again. Some people come for a few sessions, some for a few months and others decide to come longer term. Many people are now starting to use therapy over time and re-access support at times when it is needed most with someone who they trust to know them and their life well. I take a firm stance on challenging stigma surrounding mental health.

Sometimes the world seems complicated and life feels difficult. Maybe problematic relationships have stopped you trusting yourself and moving forward, or past traumatic experiences keep you stuck with anxiety and fear. You might find yourself repeating behaviours and patterns that you really don't want to, but the path forward looks foggy and is hard to navigate. I seek to support people to find a way to through problems, to grow and make changes in theirs lives and relationships, and feel more resilient in tough times, as well as being more able to appreciate and enjoy achievements.

It's hard to 'tick box' problems. Problems often do not fit into easy categories as each person has their own individual history and way of being, and so difficulties emerge in a unique way to the individual. For example, depression or anxiety might be completely normal reactions to a difficult situation, but it might seem that people are saying "oh, you've got depression" as if it is a cold and it's your fault. Anxious about contacting me? I would encourage you not to be too anxious about making contact regarding counselling or psychotherapy. Feeling anxious is a normal aspect of therapy, especially at first. I was anxious too.

I am a very experienced and professional therapist with over twelve thousand client contact hours behind me in individual, couples and group work. I feel my experience coupled with my life experiences makes me the person and the therapist I am today. My training in the person-centred approach (three years) and in Transactional Analysis (seven years) together with continuing professional and personal development and supervision give me a strong theoretical and experiential focus to bring to my client work. I work very much in a relational way (research indicates that the therapeutic relationship is key to positive therapy outcomes)

Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. I believe that you don't need to be in crisis to access counselling. Seeing a therapist doesn't mean there's something 'wrong with you' it may be you feel now is the right time to work through your emotions; or to work through traumatic experiences. You may want to challenge your negative thinking patterns, or require clarity in some areas of your life. You may want to discuss something from the past that is impacting you now. It may be now is the right time for you to learn new techniques to help you to cope differently, or feel the time is right to focus on personal growth.

The last year has hit many of us hard. The most recent lockdown has particularly caused impact in many ways to many of my clients. Whether it has intensified previous issues, or caused new issues that have had a real effect on life in so many ways; anxiety, depression, low motivation, low self esteem, loneliness, grief, finances, confusion, abuse, burn-out, overwhelm, it is completely normal to be feeling that way. Not nice. But normal considering all you have going on and have been through. So many clients feel relief in just talking about what is happening for them. I offer a safe and non-judgemental space that is uniquely yours.

I offer counselling to both individuals and couples. Sessions for individuals last a full hour, and sessions for couples last two hours. My aim is to help you understand yourself better, including all the factors that have shaped who you are and how you got to a point where you feel as though you need someone to talk to about how things are going and the issues you're facing. Then I can help you consider what changes you may wish to make. Couples seeking help can talk frankly and openly about the issues they're facing, and will find me able to discuss the practicalities of relationships and matters of a sexual nature.

Every therapy session will more than likely be a journey. Emotions run high because feeling and memories emerge that you may have not been prepared for so it's important that you feel comfortable, safe and supported. The therapy session should be a judgement free zone where you are listened to but also challenged while your boundaries are respected. You shouldn't feel the need to filter yourself, let it be your time for expression because that time is solely about you and how you're feeling. Not every session will leave you feeling emotionally raw because therapy is as much about your good days as it is your bad. Enjoy the process.
