We all have times when we feel lost, alone or misunderstood. We want things to change but we don’t know how. Unsure of what we want we may talk to
family
or friends, but all they do is offer opinions. Sometimes we have no one to talk to and remain trapped in isolation unsure of own truth. This is where counselling can help.

I tend to use a carefully crafted mix of the following approaches: EMDR, CBT, CFT, CAT, DBT, Systemic Theory, Internal
Family
Systems and Psychodynamic concepts.
I am passionate about trauma informed practice: making every effort to understand the impact of people’s lived experiences on their daily lives. My approach is based on psychological formulation, to make sense of what a person is experiencing, and then using a range of integrated approaches to help people to make changes. I care about empowering individuals to live the lives they want to live, and take a very human and empathic approach to working with people's distress.

I support clients struggling with
family
trauma, social anxiety and health issues. You may have found that over time the coping strategies you previously relied on have stopped working and patterns of behaviour from the past are holding you back. You may feel isolated and worn down by these old habits, no longer able to cope in the way you used to as it becomes harder to put a brave face on what is an increasingly challenging situation. Working together, with empathy and without judgement, in a safe, supportive and confidential environment, we can explore your experience and help you to find a better way forward that brings you joy.

I am also trained in Internal
Family
Systems Therapy which recognises our hurt and protective parts and also the capacity we all have for healing and change.
Do you want to understand yourself, feel better about yourself, and experience change in your life? You may have experienced trauma, or feel puzzled about why you feel as you do because there doesn’t seem to be an obvious cause. Either way, there are good reasons for how you feel, which I can help you to explore. You might feel stuck in patterns and unsure how to break free of them. A lot of information which helps us unlock these patterns is held in our emotions, reactions, and actions, often those that we try to keep away from. With compassionate guidance, it is possible to access this information and experience change.

Although you may have a good support network within
family
or friends it is sometimes more beneficial to speak to someone unconnected to you without bias to help you explore and understand your feelings, emotions and behaviours and to begin to implement change that is in benefit of self and allow you to look towards your future.
I am a person centred counsellor and also have a qualification in cognitive behavioural therapy. I believe counselling is a journey of self-discovery and personal development that is a continual process both during and after therapy has taken place. Through counselling, a person will learn about themselves in a way they would never intend or maybe expect. As a counsellor I will be alongside you on your therapeutic journey and create a safe space that is respectful and non-biased to allow you to discover yourself and work through any issues that may be troubling you.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
