Family Therapy Counselling in Liverpool

My PhD involved developing a family-based behaviour change programme for children and young people with obesity
Do you find yourself constantly thinking about food and constantly trying to lose weight? You’re “good” for a few weeks, only to self-sabotage and beat yourself up after another binge. Perhaps food has always been the go to – whether you’re happy, stressed, or frustrated. Or perhaps exercise is the problem. You need to do it, but it makes you miserable. You may struggle with body image, or even hate yourself for letting your body get to this state. If these resonate, you’re not alone. It’s easy to get stuck in these negative cycles, without knowing how to get out. The good news is, it’s possible to change.

Together, we’ll find strategies that feel right for you and your family.
I work with children, young people, families, and adults who might be feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or wanting more support. Many people come to me hoping to better understand themselves or their child and find a way forward. I offer a space to explore what’s happening, build on strengths, and feel more connected, whether that’s through direct therapy or parent and carer support.

I support clients with a wide range of issues and especially those struggling with family trauma, social anxiety and chronic health issues.
I've lived with Parkinson’s Disease for over 30 years. That doesn't mean I have all the answers, but it does mean I've had to ask myself a lot of the questions. It's been a challenging journey that has made me passionate about helping others in any form of emotional distress. I know it is possible to get past the pain and to live the life you want.

I look at systems ( family, work, school, culture) as well as you as an individual, to get a better idea of how to help you.
Hi! Are you feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed? Perhaps you have had difficult life experiences that you've never processed. Maybe you just want to be heard. I offer a safe, non-judgemental space to come and chat. The work is led by you, with me as a companion guide. My aim is to help you help yourself to find what you need - whether that be peace, understanding, answers or space to just be. We may explore the past and how that influences the present. Throughout the work we will build on your strengths, finding resilience and wellbeing through our conversations and the actions you put into place to look after yourself.

I work with clients from many backgrounds, but make special mention that as a gay man with neurodiversity in my close family I welcome work with LGBTQIA+ people and with neurodivergent people.
I support clients struggling with anxiety, anger, trauma, overwhelm, and difficulty feeling and expressing emotions. I have experience working with suicidal ideation. You may feel stuck or alone, struggling to make sense of your own thoughts or feelings, to recover from past experiences, or how to feel okay in the here and now. I am interested in the stories that we tell ourselves, and how those stories help or hinder us as we navigate through life. I will work with you to better understand your story so that you can make real changes in your life, in your relationships with others, and in your relationship with yourself.

I offer individual therapy and also work with couples and within family dynamics.
Are you feeling lost, overwhelmed or at a point in life where you know you need to make a change? Do you need a safe, warm and compassionate space to explore how you are really feeling with no judgement and an unbiased perspective? Do you need a place to clarify your thoughts and feelings?

The ground of my work is person-centred while a lot of my knowledge and practise addresses how you have come into the world, the affects of your culture, family, and social background.
Problems often do not fit into easy categories as each person has their own individual history and way of being, and so difficulties emerge in a unique way to the individual. For example, depression or anxiety might be completely normal reactions to a difficult situation. Anxious about contacting me? I would encourage you not to be too anxious about making contact regarding psychotherapy. Feeling anxious is a normal aspect of therapy, especially at first.

I have had more than (25 YEARS) experience working towards resolving family conflict and Domestic Abuse.
Hi, my name is Sue. Would you like to feel seen, heard, understood and accepted? Would you like to start gaining more insight into why you feel and think the way you do, and as a result move closer to mastering your emotions and finding peace? Would you like to say what you really think and feel in confidence without being judged? Would you like to improve your self esteem and move towards feeling more empowered? Do you feel overwhelmed, isolated and misunderstood? Do you suffer from depression, anxiety, constant negative thinking (coupled with feelings of fear and anger?) If so, maybe it’s time to talk in a safe space.

I specialise in two areas - working within a fat acceptance, anti-diet framework, and working with people who are estranged from family members.
I became a therapist to help people because life can be hard, and it doesn’t always give us a chance to get our head around what’s happened to us. Therapy can help you make sense of whatever is going on for you and I feel really privileged that this is my job. Who I am in the therapy room is who I am in day-to-day life, I hope to show up as my full self and I hope you will feel able to too. I strive to make my practice affirmative and inclusive because I often find that aspects of people’s identity affect their wellbeing. I take the responsibility to educate myself so that you can focus on what brought you to therapy.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
