We all experience difficult times in our lives, suffering anxiety,
depression
, stress, anger, relationship issues, grief, bereavement, physical illness, emotional/physical abuse, low mood, and low motivation, to name just a few of the reasons people come to therapy. At times we will feel like we don’t want to ‘burden’ people with how we feel so we try to push through and carry on, we try to pretend all is ok, we try and cope by putting on a smile and a brave face, often we simply find we are unable to move forward and feel stuck.

I am a Person-Centred Experiential (PCE) Therapist with a degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy and a MSc in Psychology. I have worked alongside clients in different settings including private practice, volunteering and the NHS. This has enabled me to build and enhance my skills and experience in working with different emotional distresses such as stress, anxiety,
depression
and bereavement. The non-directive talking therapy I am trained within is focused upon creating a meaningful therapeutic relationship in which an individual can feel secure and able to process emotions and experiences and to build self-awareness and self-growth.

Are you feeling stuck in old patterns? Perhaps life is feeling overwhelming, or just not as fulfilling as you sense it could be? Reaching out for help is truly one of the bravest and kindest things we can do for ourselves. If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck,
depressed
or anxious, you don't have to feel it alone. I have experienced the healing power of therapy both as client and as therapist. It is my belief and experience that things can change for the better when we have the right support. My work as a suicide prevention therapist and training in trauma have deepened this belief. Whatever you are bringing, it is welcome here.

Do you worry constantly, and feel unable to stop? Do the same thoughts seem to go round and round Your head? The psychological intervention I use is from evidenced based research and enables you to understand the role overthinking plays in anxiety and
depression
. Generally this intervention is concluded in 6/8 sessions, known as Metacognitive therapy. My work as a Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool and clinician at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, has identified clear specific ways to, be aware, understand, and therefore control this negative pattern of thoughts, within the setting of a nonjudgmental approach.

It's hard to 'tick box' problems. Problems often do not fit into easy categories as each person has their own individual history and way of being, and so difficulties emerge in a unique way to the individual. For example,
depression
or anxiety might be completely normal reactions to a difficult situation, but it might seem that people are saying "oh, you've got
depression
" as if it is a cold and it's your fault. Anxious about contacting me? I would encourage you not to be too anxious about making contact regarding counselling or psychotherapy. Feeling anxious is a normal aspect of therapy, especially at first. I was anxious too.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
