People often first come for counselling when they begin to experience symptoms of low mood and anxiety such as disturbed sleep, low levels of motivation and energy, or increased rates of irritability and tension which just don’t seem to shift. These symptoms could be related to a significantly upsetting event, or they might be linked to a background of adversities and difficulties. Either way, you might be hoping to improve your mood and to reduce feelings of anxiety or panic, to regain a sense of confidence and self esteem, and to feel more energised and motivated. People often say they want to get back to their old self again.

Feeling SAD, CONFUSED and/or ANGRY? Feeling stuck/trapped? What's the point? Nothing changes? I know the fears of opening up emotionally or mentally. I also know now of how beneficial it is for YOU. To have time to understand your 'self' so that YOU can process and heal, change YOUR future. It's empowering. I have studied for 6 years, to Masters level. Committed to my own personal development. Losing nearly three stone in weight (an emotional eater). Unattached from drinking 5 times a week to now occasionally socially or sometimes I just drink water and ice! Smoking and a fitter body is next. YOU are important! Take control back!

I qualified as an Art Psychotherapist in 2009 and since then have worked in the community delivering art therapy in schools, eating disorder units, palliative care and in the Young Adult Service. For the last 5 years I have mainly worked with children and young people as well as their families and run a private practice alongside. My training was essentially psychodynamic but since qualifying I have completed further training covering family systems, narcissistic and domestic abuse, addictions, codependency, and play therapy.

Many of my clients come to creative therapy when they have used more traditional approaches and felt it was not fully allowing them to express themselves or reach the depth of connection with their own feelings.
Do you need other ways of expression in therapy than sitting and talking - in order to make true sense of your experiences? How to tell the story of YOU when words are not enough? Or maybe you have always been sensitive to images, colour, music or anything that is outside the spoken world? I am a creative integrative counsellor providing a safe and non judgemental space for you to reach your inner experiences beyond expressing them verbally. You don't need any artistic or creative skills to benefit from this form of therapy - the resources are already in you - we will work together on activating the right side of the brain.

I use a number of different ways to access that inner self or self-awareness and can do this through a number of varied modalities that include cognitive (through language /talking therapy set within a integrative framework ) more experiential (art, colour,) meditation (guided and unguided) immediacy/ encounter mindfulness.
My personal philosophy in life and within my counselling practice is that the human condition is often very difficult to navigate, and we are the expert in our own world. I offer an environment that is conducive to learning about oneself and how we integrate or negotiate who we are in the world. I have an innate belief that given the right environment ( an environment empathy and non-judgmentalism known as unconditional positive regard) Given this environment I believe enables people to develop that innate capacity to heal, grow and develop to a more authentic, self-nurturing sense of self

I use person centred, attachment focused therapy, elements of CBT and art and play therapy to enable the most suitable therapy to meet the clients needs within a safe and empathetic space.
If you are feeling like things are getting you down and preventing you leading your life the way you would like to, perhaps you may feel anxious or depressed and feel you have lost your self-esteem and belief in yourself, this could be through difficult life events like stress, relationship, bereavement or something that happened to you in the past. Taking back control of your life and living the way you want to can be helped with therapy to gain a more positive happier future.

I offer short and long term therapy to children, young people and adults, as a Play and Creative arts therapist and an Integrative psychotherapeutic Counsellor, I can integrate creative, playful and expressive arts, such as art, sandtray, clay and imagery into my relational and developmental approach and offer this alongside talking.
People seek out therapy for lots of reasons & it can take time to feel safe enough or to trust enough to talk openly, sometimes there are not the words. My aim is to establish a warm therapeutic relationship and offer a safe space for you to share and explore what has brought you to therapy at a pace that feels manageable to and for you. I aim to meet you where you are at so that you have the time and space to feel heard and met as you are. Together we can explore the challenges but also seek to identify and build on your strengths.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
