From stress, anxiety and depression, to challenges around pregnancy and
parenting
, illness and bereavement, relationships, addiction and even suicide.
We dream of success, money, holidays, happy families and good health, but life doesn't always go to plan. When we are hit with the unexpected, a loss, a relationship that goes wrong, unbearable work pressures, troubled by unresolved experiences of the past or hopelessness about the future, our mental health is affected. We can feel sad, overwhelmed, fearful. We lose confidence and self-esteem. Our physical health suffers too and we can become dependent on medication, alcohol or other non-prescribed solutions. Counselling is a way out, providing support in a confidential, non-judgmental, understanding and empathetic relationship.

A good relationship or 'fit' and genuinely ‘feeling felt’ play a huge part in the success of therapy. This role is where every path I took in a challenging life was leading to – helping others navigate the mental well being difficulties we all face. Sometimes we are aware of the exact reason(s) we need to talk to someone, at others it can be a struggle to pinpoint why we feel so low. Modern life carries more pressures than ever, a non-judgemental space, where you can reflect with clarity, in an empathic environment, is vital to maintaining a good sense of who you are. We'll find a way forward together, with your leading the way.

Whether your feelings are connected to a recent loss, breakdown in a relationship, anxiety related to work/studies, trauma, abuse or addiction – psychotherapy has the potential to help you. As a qualified psychotherapist, I provide a safe space where you can explore your feelings, memories and experiences, understanding the unconscious defences you’ve used to protect yourself in your everyday life. Together, we will make sense of them and work towards helping you find new and alternative ways of coping in the future.

A warm welcome to you. I want to help you transform your relationships through understanding yourself and what happens in your communication with others. When you can appreciate why you respond in certain ways and how you can effect change, you can feel liberated and comfortable in moving forward. It is no surprise that at times it can be a troubling event, a new challenge, or some discomfort in your life that compels you to take the time to discover your inner strengths, your own worth, and what it will take to overcome these challenges.

My aim is to co-create an environment that offers you a place to bring and share your unique experiences and begin to explore and understand how they have impacted you. I believe everyone can benefit from sharing their stories; often being truly heard for the first time. Nonetheless, this can feel odd initially, sat sharing information with a stranger. My creative approach to therapy responds to your individual needs to best support you whist undertaking this. My experience of working with survivors of trauma has been a live demonstration of the impact of previous and current experiences on our health.

Talking to a psychotherapist who is trained to help you make some sense of what is concerning you is the first step towards feeling better. If you want to change your situation on the outside, it’s good to start by looking at what you can change on the inside. Perhaps you have serious difficulties finding peace and joy in your life. Your sense of well-being, physically and mentally, may be reduced or destroyed. You might find yourself sliding into unhealthy or even self-destructive behaviours. Your persistent self-doubt leads to anxiety and depression, causing relationship problems and anger issues. You have a feeling that you do not quite know who you are. Or perhaps you just know “something is not quite right in my life” but you can’t pinpoint what it is.

I offer therapeutic counselling to children, young people and adults. I have worked with children and young people within education for just over 20 years. I also educated myself further in Forest School and taught outdoors. Throughout this time is where I learned a great deal about the benefits of nature and the natural effects it has on health and well-being. I trained as a person centred therapist because I am passionate about empowering people to learn more about themselves and strive for positive change. I also experienced my own difficulties and trauma during childhood

Parenting Counsellors
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioural problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilised, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
