Domestic Abuse Counselling in Lincoln
I specialise in trauma from a range of causes, including domestic/sexual violence, historic child abuse and experiences of emergency first responders.
Life can feel complicated and heavy when anxiety, perfectionism, past traumas or neurodivergence make daily challenges harder to navigate. If you’ve been feeling stuck, unfulfilled or unsure how to move forward, therapy can help you gain perspective and learn effective strategies for change. In our work together, we’ll take things step by step, exploring what’s happening beneath the surface, developing practical tools, and building new ways of thinking and coping. Together, we’ll focus on understanding your experiences and developing skills that support a more balanced, confident, and meaningful life.

Hello, I am Amy. I am an integrative therapist which means I adapt my style of therapy dependent on your needs, pace and how you prefer to work. I provide short-term and long-term therapy to adults and young people (11+).
In my practice, I am committed to making sure the therapeutic journey is an authentic and collaborative process for the individual, with your preferences at the centre of the journey. Sometimes, expressing thoughts and feeling can be difficult or we just simply 'do not know' how we are feeling, together we can figure that out. Therapy is not just talking, it a process of understanding yourself and your needs.

You may be feeling like you’re moving in circles without a clear way forward. This could be due to life changes ,grief, past trauma or a sense of feeling stuck and overwhelmed.
Many of my clients describe feeling overwhelmed, isolated, or unsure of how to begin making changes.
If this sounds familiar, counselling can give you a safe and understanding space to talk openly, at your own pace. My role is to be alongside you-helping you feel heard, offering gentle support, different thinking and working with you to find new ways of coping, healing, and moving forward.

A warm welcome to you. I want to help you transform your relationships through understanding yourself and what happens in your communication with others. When you can appreciate why you respond in certain ways and how you can effect change, you can feel liberated and comfortable in moving forward. It is no surprise that at times it can be a troubling event, a new challenge, or some discomfort in your life that compels you to take the time to discover your inner strengths, your own worth, and what it will take to overcome these challenges.

People seek therapy for many different reasons. It can be somewhere to pause and reflect, make sense of experiences, navigate change, deepen self-understanding, develop new perspectives, or explore patterns in relationships.
Some want to clarify their values, strengthen boundaries, heal from past experiences, or cultivate healthier relationships in their lives.
Therapy offers time and space for reflection, exploration, and personal growth around issues such as anxiety, loss, trauma, attachment, identity and more, at a pace that feels manageable for you.

I am a level 7 person-centred psychotherapist, with experience working with for example; bereavement, substance use, domestic abuse, trauma, relationship issues and neuro-diversity.
Psychotherapy:
Making the decision to come to therapy/counselling can be difficult and sometimes anxiety provoking, and finding someone who you feel comfortable with can be a positive and reassuring start. I offer an initial, no commitment 30 minute session where we can begin to get to know each other, and begin to look at what you would to focus on in the work that we may do together. Part of the first session will include an outline of how I work, what to expect, discussing a working agreement which covers confidentiality etc, but it is mainly an opportunity to talk and be heard in a respectful, non-judgmental space.

When working with trauma, including childhood and adult physical, psychological and sexual abuse, I share Jean Paul Sartre's view that, 'Freedom is what you do with what has been done to you
In my experience, we often come to therapy when we feel stuck in a way of living which has become increasingly difficult and painful to sustain. Perhaps you feel life is simply surviving not thriving; that relationships have become a prison or a battlefield; that you are lost, without purpose or passion; that the future seems more scary than exciting? If any of this resonates with you, my existential approach will help you explore and process any trauma in your past; pain in the present and anxiety about the future. Helping to bring the 'real you' out of hiding and find a more joyful, peaceful and authentic way of living.

As a relational-developmental therapist I have an interest in working with clients who have experienced emotional neglect or abuse in childhood.
Life can be daunting and can give us painful experiences that stay with us. As humans this is sometimes too much for us to bear alone. Reaching out is the first step in working through the things that are making you feel stuck.
I provide a space where you can safely explore things that are troubling you, whether these are in your day-to-day life or have been with you for a long time.
When things go wrong painful feelings and memories can emerge that can make us feel anxious, depressed, isolated and hopeless. Psychotherapy can help you make sense of these feelings and help you find a more solid sense of yourself.

I am a person-centred psychotherapist ready to support you in that change, and happy to work with you face to face or online, and at whatever pace works best for you.

Have you ever felt like your mind is a ball of string, tangled and in need of gentle untangling?
Maybe you’re at a point in your life where you’d benefit from a pause button, or just a quiet moment to simply be. If that resonates, then you’re in the right place.
I understand that taking the first step towards seeing a therapist can be one of the hardest and most vulnerable moments, and my aim is to make that step feel safe, supported, and met with warmth and trust.
I also work with the Connections Model, seeing each individual as a whole, mind, body, emotion, and soul by exploring how different parts of ourselves connect.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
