I am passionate about trauma-informed care and utilise a whole-person approach. Trauma can often underpin common mental health difficulties, and I can work with you to process the source of your difficulties and/or focus on your current symptomology. You may wish to focus on your current experiences of depression, anxiety, etc., or wish to address the underlying difficulties that have led to these. I also have a keen interest in complex trauma, dissociation, childhood emotional neglect, medically unexplained symptoms, functional neurological disorder, chronic pain, chronic fatigue and other physical difficulties.

I am particularly interested in helping people heal and improve their relationships both with themselves and others. I will help you make the changes you desire in your life and help you become more comfortable and content in your relationship with yourself. As you do this there will be a natural progression towards healing and improving your relationships with others. As you reconnect with yourself and others you will gain contentment and purpose in your life. Therapy will help if your needs are more complex too. For example if you suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, depression, long-term anxiety or personality disorders.

A warm welcome to you. I want to help you transform your relationships through understanding yourself and what happens in your communication with others. When you can appreciate why you respond in certain ways and how you can effect change, you can feel liberated and comfortable in moving forward. It is no surprise that at times it can be a troubling event, a new challenge, or some discomfort in your life that compels you to take the time to discover your inner strengths, your own worth, and what it will take to overcome these challenges.

Hello, my name is Lisa . I am a Degree qualified Private Psychotherapist who has practiced in the NHS. Many of the clients I see are not able to pinpoint what is wrong but know they feel confused and unhappy without understanding why. However you are feeling just now, things can change in time with the right support. Talking to a psychotherapist who is trained to help you make some sense of what is concerning you is the first step towards feeling better. The most important thing is for you to feel safe and comfortable with whoever you choose. This trust will encourage you to explore your thoughts and feelings more freely.

Post Lock down I am seeing more people whose relationship is under greater pressure due to both being at home, financial worries, anxiety about the changes that are happening in the world around them to name but a few. Others are seeking help due to the loss of a loved one, individuals are feeling isolated and having time to face fears that busy lives help supress. All of these things are things that therapy can help with.

My expertise is with people who have experienced trauma (long-term or short-term). Events like this can lead to a range of mental health difficulties, such as depression, anxiety, panic and psychosis and also unhelpful coping behaviours, such as self-harm and suicidal thoughts, substance use, relationship struggles, and so on. I aim to help you understand where issues are stemming from, so we can work on developing a healthier life for you. I also work with risk related behaviours - contact for more info.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
