I have over 30 years of experience working with people who wish to explore their mental health and wellbeing. I work with people who are 18+ experiencing challenges including anxiety, phobias, PTSD, depression and low self-esteem. I am also more than happy to work with people who wouldn’t define themselves using these categories who wish to get to know and understand their internal landscape better.

Life can be really hard sometimes, difficult things happen or people struggle emotionally for a variety of reasons. Lots of people need support at some time in their lives for themselves or people they care for. I genuinely believe that most people who are struggling want to improve their situation and need support to enable them to be and feel the best they can. However, just because you did not cause all your problems does not mean you do not have to work to try to make things better. That is where I can help, providing support, therapy and specialist assessment for young people and adults.

My ideal client would be someone who already knows themselves a little, has possibly been in therapy before, so understands the path ahead. Someone who is emotionally intelligent and truth seeking; perhaps someone who seeks a deeper understanding of themselves, their context and their relationships.

There are many reasons you may be seeking counselling but I imagine you are wanting something to change. Counselling is not only about what we think of ourselves and our life but more importantly, our felt sense of ourselves our visceral experience of life and our inner experience. Giving space and awareness to our experience is what informs us of what is needed for healing, growth and change. My aim is to facilitate a relationship that is tailored to you and created with you. This provides the conditions for you to freely and safely explore the challenges you may face as well as the trauma or difficulties you have experienced.

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist with over 10 years experience. I work full-time seeing individual adult clients and I hope that my approach is experienced as warm, non-judgmental and relational. Whatever has led you to look for a therapist today, my own view is that current persistent difficulties in life have their roots in the past. And I believe that it is only by getting underneath these symptoms and trying to understand where they come from that real and lasting change can take place. But just to sit with someone who will listen attentively and without judgement can be a completely new experience for many people.

You may be considering counselling or therapy for one or a number or reasons. At any time in our life we can be required to face unwanted challenges as life's inevitable ups and downs get the better of us. This can be due to an unexpected change in circumstances or it may be that life itself is demanding too much right now and you are struggling to cope. It may be that everything in your life is going according to plan and yet, still, there is a deeper sense that something is missing. Talking to friends and relatives provides only temporary relief and you are wondering if speaking to a therapist might be helpful.

Life can sometimes be deeply painful. Loss, bereavement, trauma, isolation and loneliness, anxiety and depression, relationship problems and lack of purpose are a few examples of life’s struggles. Anger, shame, sadness, confusion, escapism or shutting down are a few ways that we might respond. When this begins to affect our quality of life, our relationships, and how we feel about ourselves, we might seek counselling to help us to live more fully. Perhaps you need time and space to process painful feelings, to connect (or reconnect) to your self, your inner resources and to uncover more self compassion and acceptance.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

Many people find themselves continually repeating familiar patterns of behaviour and attracting the same problems in their lives. If this has been your cycle, you are not alone, and it is ok to ask for support. Many clients come to me because they have a desire to change yet have been able to make these changes themselves. I have no magical ability to heal anyone or change their life, however I can help you to process how you are feeling, help you to find new perspectives, and can pass on insights and concepts that may help to make sense of your problems, so you can develop the capacity to become your own healer.

Coming to counselling allows you to the space and time to think deeply about yourself and your relationships. I hope to help you do this in a warm, open and thoughtful way. The focus of our sessions is your needs which we will talk about throughout our work. We may consider patterns of relating to others, particularly those patterns of which you are unaware. Often our work together will explore how past experiences might be affecting the present and how your internal world, often built for the past, can unhelpfully affect important aspects of your day-to-day life.

People seek counselling and therapy for all kinds of reasons and the outcome people seek from therapy is change. I aim to meet everyone with genuine interest and curiosity, to provide a safe, non-judgmental, and friendly space, in which you can explore the issues you need to, as I support you to do so and to move towards the changes you want to make.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
