At times life is tough and this can challenge our emotional health and well being, making us feel overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, depressed , angry or lacking in self esteem. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. I believe counselling can be a transformative and meaningful experience, with change made possible through a supportive therapeutic relationship, which helps us to move towards acceptance of self or empowerment to positive change. As such, I am dedicated to bringing about healing and growth in others.

We will all encounter challenges during our lives. It may be difficult to ask for help but in reaching out we show strength - it takes courage to be vulnerable, open up and acknowledge we need support. I specialise in working with low self esteem, transforming deep-rooted issues, anxiety, depression and feelings of being stuck - whether it be in your relationship, in your job, or life in general. I have been working on an individual basis with clients both short and long term since 2015. Counselling can allow you to gain inner clarity and strength, as well as help you to live a more meaningful life.

Most people enter therapy with the entirely understandable aim of addressing and easing current symptoms of distress ( depression , anxiety, difficulties sustaining intimate relationships etc) and receiving reassurance and comfort when life seems hard to bear. But I believe that we also need to explore deeper; that it is only by getting underneath these symptoms and trying to understand them and where they come from that real and lasting change can take place. I see the relationship between client and therapist as central and the process as a collaborative journey undertaken by us both.

Whether it be anxiety or depression , relationship issues or loss in all its forms, my focus is on your well-being. As a qualified counsellor and therapist with experience in education, employment and charitable settings my aim is to help you to explore whatever difficulties or challenges you are experiencing. It may be that patterns of behaviour that kept you safe in the past are now holding you back from living a more fulfilling life and by identifying these patterns and being curious about the protective role they played we can begin to loosen their grip here in the present.

I am a BACP registered psychodynamic therapist. I have found that people seek therapy for many different reasons: you may be struggling with difficult relationships or addictive patterns that are ruining your life; you may be experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression , sudden outbursts or panic attacks; or perhaps you have received a diagnosis and seek an alternative to medication or one-size-fits-all treatments. You may simply feel stuck or that life is missing meaning. I can offer help with these and other issues. The fact that you are reading this is a very positive sign that you are ready to begin work on yourself.

I have a broad range of experience, working with a range of issues, including anxiety, depression , eating disorders, bereavement, sexuality, and relationship difficulties.
To begin counselling can be a life-changing decision. You may want to address thoughts and feelings or specific challenges that can be hard to speak to others about, or perhaps made a decision to address the impact of past trauma, loss or shame. By sharing your story and emotional journey within the therapeutic space, it can be heard in a new way, as though for the first time. In this way, different narratives can be explored, allowing you to take greater ownership of your life and your future.

Are you feeling depressed ; confused about what you feel; ground down to the point where you feel unable to cope; or simply wishing you could find someone who would genuinely hear you? Individuals choose therapy for a variety of reasons and often the biggest hurdle we face is an inner voice telling us our problems are nothing special and we should just get on with life. I provide a safe, empathic environment where you can find your voice and express your concerns without fear of being judged and to provide you with the means to work out your own answers and create the life you want.

As a CBT therapist and midwife I really understand the barriers you might feel asking for help during the perinatal period (pregnancy, birth or postnatally). Many people struggle to talk about their anxiety, depression or doubts and worries about being a parent. You might feel judged or that you have failed in some way and there can be a real sense of pressure to feel positive throughout, making it sometimes feel really hard to admit you are struggling, so I understand just how significant asking for help is. Reaching out is positive and is the first step towards recovery - of your sense of self, your self worth and your wellbeing.

Anxiety, depression , and traumatic events can hold you back from fully being yourself, there might be times when you feel a bit disconnected from life, yourself and those around you. Self-doubt, dread or negative thoughts about yourself and your abilities may prevent you from moving forward in your personal life or career. Perhaps you are troubled by your past experiences or current situation, have a difficult relationship with yourself or others. You might feel quite alone, out of place or misunderstood, find yourself withdrawing or putting on a brave face.

I've been counselling since 1989, and have extensive experience of working with sexual abuse and trauma, parenting and attachment difficulties, identity and relationship issues, depression and anxiety, bereavement and loss. I don’t claim to be an ‘expert’ in any of these areas because everyone's response is different and what matters is you and your own unique experience of these difficulties. I am committed to collaborating with you to find the resilient, hopeful part of yourself that becomes expert in managing your challenges and is motivated by the smallest signs of progress towards your preferred future.

There are different times in our lives when we may encounter challenges in our emotional world. Transition and change can sometimes trigger these challenging feelings. For example, moving home or employment, changing relationships or friendships; life changes such as going to university or reaching age milestones. Any of these can significantly affect the way we feel about ourselves. We react in different ways to what we encounter in our environment. We might become depressed or overwhelmed by intense emotions or we might feel anxious and unable to engage in social activities. It can all become too much to manage alone.

Depression Counsellors
Depressive disorders are characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and worthlessness and a lack of desire to engage in formerly pleasurable activities. Depression is not a passing blue mood, which almost everyone experiences from time to time, but a complex mind/body illness that interferes with everyday functioning. It not only darkens one's outlook, it is commonly marked by sleep problems and changes in energy levels and appetite. It alters the structure and function of nerve cells so that it disrupts the way the brain processes information and interprets experience.

Despite feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness, depression is a treatable condition. It can be treated with psychotherapy by depression counsellors in Lewes. As with many illnesses, the earlier treatment begins, the more effective it can be and the greater the likelihood that recurrence can be prevented.

Psychotherapy addresses the thinking patterns that precipitate depression, and studies show that it prevents recurrence. Drug therapy is often helpful in relieving symptoms, such as severe anxiety, so that people can engage in meaningful psychotherapy.
