Our relationship is key. I aim to get to know you over time, but for now, here's a bit about me so you can decide whether to make contact. My practice - www.blokecounselling.com - is for anyone who finds it easier to talk with a bloke. It also describes my style: straight-talking and free from buzzwords. Together, we can explore / understand what’s happened to you and the impact this might have had (rather than be told what’s 'wrong' with you). I've worked in The City (with lots of time in former Soviet Union) and was once described as a corporate, rugby-playing, beer-swilling pig. There's clearly a gentler side to me though.

As a man you may be experiencing confusion, stress or despair around your role and how to meet new expectations of emotional openness. Perhaps it feels like no one understands you and how hard you try to be a good person. Maybe you want to be less stressed and angry, enjoy some inner peace, and rekindle your spark for life again which was sucked out of you a long time ago. Perhaps you feel fear, shame or isolation, and just want to be confident and self-assured again. Or you may be a woman seeking to understand the behaviour of important men in your life.

If you are reading this I wonder if life feels difficult at the moment. Perhaps you are feeling anxious, depressed, living with the distress of uncertainty? Finding it difficult to let go of control, of perfectionism, feeling vulnerable or struggling with living in a ‘never enough’ world? Is this having a negative effect on your relationships, or are you struggling to understand traumatic events in your past, and you can no longer soldier on as before? However you may be feeling, it can feel really scary to come and talk to a counsellor. But I respect your courage to reach out, and I will listen to you with warmth and empathy.

Having the support of a family member or friend can be invaluable but sometimes we may limit what we say to them for fear of being judged or worrying about over-burdening them. Having someone impartial to talk to without these barriers can therefore be extremely helpful. My take on counselling is pretty straightforward. It’s about providing a safe space for you to talk about anything you feel is troubling you or holding you back from moving forward. A space in which you can explore thoughts and feelings, try and make sense of what’s going on and find some tools and answers to make some positive steps.

Most of us experience times in our lives when we feel low, worried or anxious. This might be because of specific difficulties such as anxiety, night terrors, panic attacks or depression, it could also be a general sense of feeling down and simply not understanding why. Talking to an experienced, accredited therapist offers you the opportunity to explore what concerns you may have in a confidential, non-judgemental setting with someone who explores what life events might have contributed to these feelings. I have 15 years clinical counselling experience working with adults and 12 years working with students (18+)

At times life can be hard to cope with and understanding our thoughts, emotions and actions can feel over whelming and all consuming. Life at times can feel rather heavy and embarking on a therapeutic journey together we can help lighten the load. Working together on your journey to help you understand your past experiences, how these experiences can shape the way we feel and act, how this affects you now. Being able to reflect and start to recognise our own emotions is the building foundation for emotional, mental and physical resilience.

Psychological ill health comes in many forms all of which are scary in their own way. The prospect of trying to address symptoms can be even scarier. Choosing a therapist with whom it is possible to feel comfortable is crucial in finding a workable solution. Therapy is a journey which may require rest stops, u-turns, refuelling and maintenance. What is needed may not be clear at first but sometimes simply stopping and taking a breather is a positive start. All I can say now is that together we can take the time it takes to demystify what is being experienced. This can be done in a safe and secure space where you will be heard.

If you are facing difficulties in your life, feeling stuck, overwhelmed or like your life is out of your control then sitting with an experienced therapist can help. Together we can work out how you are feeling and where you might want to make changes. Therapy can help you to understand all areas of your life more clearly and awareness often leads to real change. I work with individuals to look at many different areas of their lives that are affecting them and also with more than one person in relationship counselling.

People choose to have counselling for many reasons. Sometimes we may know the cause but feel stuck with emotions that we can’t seem to change or we can’t understand why we have felt this way for this long. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be an obvious explanation for how we feel. We may have feelings of low moods, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed but we just can’t put a finger on why. We may also feel isolated or alone in this and that other people wouldn’t understand. Talking through these feelings with a therapist can help to explore these thoughts and feelings to better understand the causes, and explore ways to work through them.

If you’re reading this I guess you want to know a little about who I am and whether therapy would be good for you. In which case, hello – nice to meet you! I think I can help people with just the right kind of safe, non-judgemental environment that allows us to understand and work through issues. I work with clients face to face, or remotely by phone or Zoom, using a range of exercises and techniques that I have personally developed to help release tension and improve life. With a bit of work, you can end therapy feeling more secure in yourself and free from all that stuff which has stopped you from being the real you.

Men's Issues Counsellors

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
