From my initial counselling training I have qualifications in systemic family therapy , EMDR for trauma and a postgraduate certificate in Compassion Focused Therapy using evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, energy therapy and mindfulness.
During our lives we encounter loss including bereavement, separation, ill health and relationship or transitional difficulties. All of these external factors can and will affect how we relate to others, the world around us and most importantly ourselves. This may include withdrawing, substance use or abuse, unhealthy eating patterns and other self harmful behaviours. Our work together will be to focus on these changes and how you can develop and cultivate a positive relationship with yourself, and others. I have supported many people who experience overwhelming symptoms of trauma, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

I have personal experience of estranged fatherhood and the family court system.
As a man you may be experiencing confusion, stress or despair around your role and how to meet new expectations of emotional openness. Perhaps it feels like no one understands you and how hard you try to be a good person. Maybe you want to be less stressed and angry, enjoy some inner peace, and rekindle your spark for life again which was sucked out of you a long time ago. Perhaps you feel fear, shame or isolation, and just want to be confident and self-assured again. Or you may be a woman seeking to understand the behaviour of important men in your life.

I have experience of group work with children, adults and family work.
At times life can be hard to cope with and understanding our thoughts, emotions and actions can feel over whelming and all consuming. Life at times can feel rather heavy and embarking on a therapeutic journey together we can help lighten the load. Working together on your journey to help you understand your past experiences, how these experiences can shape the way we feel and act, how this affects you now. Being able to reflect and start to recognise our own emotions is the building foundation for emotional, mental and physical resilience.

Are you living with feelings of self- doubt, blame, anger or shame? Do you need help to cope with depression or anxiety? Maybe you have suffered loss, and doubt your ability to sustain meaningful relationships with family and friends. Perhaps you are in a relationship that is stuck in the rut, or mired in hopelessness, negativity, and mistrust. It may be that your relationship has changed from a loving one to one of repeated misunderstandings, heated arguments or frosty silence. Stressful life events can bring about such difficulties, or sometimes disappointments simply accumulate over time.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
