Issues created in past relationships can be repaired within a therapeutic
relationship
without further risk of shame.
Perhaps you are conflicted; On the one hand, you want close relationships – On the other you mistrust their authenticity. Maybe you withdraw into fantasy, overthink situations and replaying past mistakes. Chit-chat feels awkward, fake and you worry about missing out. Do You feel anxiety physically through nausea, blushing, sweating or stuttering? Feeling “normal” seems hard, affecting your confidence.

Lauren Atkinson Feel Free Play Therapy
It is often the strength of the therapeutic
relationship
which defines the progress a child makes on their journey in therapy.
Hi I'm Lauren and I'm a fully qualified Play Therapist. Play is a child's natural language: it speaks the worries and feelings too confusing for words. Where adults may speak about their worries and problems, children can express themselves through play long before they can articulate thoughts and feelings through the complexities of language. Often they do not know the words to describe their internal world but are ready to share it with opportunities through play and creative arts. Play builds trust, tells stories and takes us on brave adventures to wonderful places of safety, hope and happiness.

Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong. Or, you may know what’s wrong, but not necessarily how to go about changing it. Everyone is different, and I utilise my skills and training to approach counselling in a collaborative way. I provide a non-judgemental, safe, confidential, therapeutic space where we can better understand what’s going on for you and explore ways to create or restore balance in your life. A great deal of my practice is focused on relationships (with ourselves and others- including our relationships with the things and people we turn to- substances, eating disorders, self- harm etc).

I am passionate in exploring the most important
relationship
which is with ourselves.
You have already taken the very first step to reach out and help yourself - that is brave. Is it because nothing is making sense anymore? Feelings of anxiety now have its strongholds and nothing feels certain either, only this deep sinking feeling of dread! I know it can feel daunting to reach out for help but by working together I can provide that space in a safe, and confidential environment to explore these issues. There maybe many reasons for accessing counselling and I am mindful that everyone has a story. I am also aware that there can be stigma attached in seeking emotional support.

During our lives we encounter loss including bereavement, separation, ill health and
relationship
or transitional difficulties. All of these external factors can and will affect how we relate to others, the world around us and most importantly ourselves. This may include withdrawing, substance use or abuse, unhealthy eating patterns and other self harmful behaviours. Our work together will be to focus on these changes and how you can develop and cultivate a positive
relationship
with yourself, and others. I have supported many people who experience overwhelming symptoms of trauma, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
