Reprocessing Therapy.
Sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong. Or, you may know what’s wrong, but not necessarily how to go about changing it. Everyone is different, and I utilise my skills and training to approach counselling in a collaborative way. I provide a non-judgemental, safe, confidential, therapeutic space where we can better understand what’s going on for you and explore ways to create or restore balance in your life. A great deal of my practice is focused on relationships (with ourselves and others- including our relationships with the things and people we turn to- substances, eating disorders, self- harm etc).

Coming for therapy or counselling can be difficult: Sharing our story with a stranger can not only feel scary, it can make our
pain
and discomfort seem more real and feel more intense.
A great deal of my practice is focused on supporting individuals going through challenging times in their lives due to anxiety, depression and those having difficulty in finding direction. I have particular experience supporting people suffering from chronic or terminal
illness
and with bereaved people, exploring the many complex issues which arise at such times. I am very comfortable and able to work with clients who have concerns about sexual identity and sexuality. I am also a qualified supervisor. Within this role, again, I base my practise on a developmental, relational model.

Long-term
illness
, bereavement, trauma etc was commonplace and experiencing this on a daily basis has grounded me well.
Our relationship is key. I aim to get to know you over time, but for now, here's a bit about me so you can decide whether to make contact. My practice - www.blokecounselling.com - is for anyone who finds it easier to talk with a bloke. It also describes my style: straight-talking and free from buzzwords. Together, we can explore / understand what’s happened to you and the impact this might have had (rather than be told what’s 'wrong' with you). I've worked in The City (with lots of time in former Soviet Union) and was once described as a corporate, rugby-playing, beer-swilling pig. There's clearly a gentler side to me though.

It can be really tough to actually talk about what is going on for you. Sometimes we feel shame or fear at the prospect of sharing these feelings. Sometimes there just aren't words for those feelings. I offer a space in which whatever you wish to talk about is fine. I am not easily shocked! Our time spent together will involve creating a safe space in which you can explore whatever it is that you want or need. I like to hold a space where I embrace that everybody is unique and that nobody is "perfect." I also understand the drive to achieve that perfection and how difficult it can be balancing the two.

Hello. My name is Lauren. I understand just how daunting it can be to reach out to a therapist; someone you don't know – especially when you are struggling to get by. Sometimes there are no words when things get really hard, and sometimes there are nothing but words. I want to hear your story in whatever way you can tell it, and even if you can't find a way, I want to be there with you anyway; to be a warm, gentle, compassionate presence so you are not on your own.

Life is full of events, relationships, stresses and strains and all these impact on us in many different ways. It can affect all the important things to us such as school, work, relationships and our own perception of ourselves. This can be tiring and overwhelming. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way and I believe strongly that a person can benefit from having a space to discuss their feelings and develop ideas and strategies to improve their emotional wellbeing.

Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.
Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.
How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
