Anxiety
and low mood got the better of you? At times we get stuck in overwhelming, vicious cycles. After changing how I engage with my own anxious thoughts, I decided to train to be a psychotherapist so I could help other people do the same. I wish I’d known about CBT when I was in my 20s! If you are feeling a little overwhelmed by
anxiety
, then CBT could help you too. I help clients to examine what is maintaining their issues and develop coping techniques. It's impossible to eliminate
anxiety
altogether, but you can build your resilience and learn to surf the wave! Email contact is best as I am often with clients.Or leave a message

During our lives we encounter loss including bereavement, separation, ill health and relationship or transitional difficulties. All of these external factors can and will affect how we relate to others, the world around us and most importantly ourselves. This may include withdrawing, substance use or abuse, unhealthy eating patterns and other self harmful behaviours. Our work together will be to focus on these changes and how you can develop and cultivate a positive relationship with yourself, and others. I have supported many people who experience overwhelming symptoms of trauma, low self-esteem,
anxiety
and depression.

Hi, I'm Caitlyn. I know how overwhelming the search for a therapist can be - especially when life can already feel overwhelming. Many people turn to therapy because they are struggling with depression and
anxiety
, processing a loss, wanting to understand themselves better, longing to shift areas of stuckness, living with relational difficulties, or experiencing the aftermath of trauma. Therapy can be a place to engage with your story, be met in your pain, understand your patterns of relating, and feel seen.

Most of us experience times in our lives when we feel low, worried or anxious. This might be because of specific difficulties such as
anxiety
, night terrors,
panic
attacks or depression, it could also be a general sense of feeling down and simply not understanding why. Talking to an experienced, accredited therapist offers you the opportunity to explore what concerns you may have in a confidential, non-judgemental setting with someone who explores what life events might have contributed to these feelings. I have 15 years clinical counselling experience working with adults and 12 years working with students (18+)

Everyone can struggle at times - with
anxiety
, low self-esteem, depression or just feeling low. Close relationships can go stale or get into difficulties. Bereavements can knock us sideways - sometimes 'hitting' suddenly even though it happened some years ago. Recent or past traumatic events can have a huge impact on our wellbeing. These are some of the emotional difficulties people struggle with. Close relationships have their ups and downs and emotions, even negative ones, are a normal part of our daily lives. It's when they drag us down, affect our quality of life, become overwhelming, that counselling can be a great help.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
