Life can be tough at times. Whether it's issues at work, with family and relationships, illness, loss,
abuse
, sexuality, phobias, anxiety, addiction or just general confidence, we all need help from time to time. For years I thought that the best way to deal with the feelings brought about by life's challenges was to 'bottle them up' and not talk about them, hoping they would go away. The reality was that this led to issues with anxiety, low mood and in extreme cases, panic attacks. Sound familiar? Just as it did for me, counselling could help you unlock the root cause of your issues and deal with them once and for all.

I have experience working with a wide range of issues such as
abuse
, trauma, anxiety and depression.
I am an integrative psychotherapist, and I draw upon a number of different theories in order to provide the most appropriate therapeutic support to each of my clients. I believe that counselling can help us see the unhelpful patterns we find ourselves in, as well as explain why they are happening. This can then lead to a shift in perspective, and help us work towards permanent change in our lives. I believe my role is to assist clients as they go through this process, and support as they move towards the life they want.

Counselling helps you to explore and understand the issues that are making life difficult for you. In our first session I would ask you to tell me what you are finding difficult, I would also answer your questions about counselling and tell you more about what is involved. Most important is that you feel comfortable talking with me. I will not tell you what to do, but I will help you to explore what you want to do. I will have knowledge which may help you e.g if you are grieving any loss I can help you understand the stages if grief. I provide a warm, non-judgemental space where you can talk, be heard and feel safe.

Domestic Abuse Counsellors
What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?
Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognise that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.
When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?
Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.
What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?
Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.
How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?
It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
