If you are on this page, it probably means you are a feeling a little stuck and could do with someone to trust, not judge you and listen to you. I can do that. What makes me different, I’ve been there. I’m not going to write paragraphs about me because this is about you. If you’d like to know more about me, please visit my site ww.allanclayton.co.uk “When I stand at the foot of a mountain, I can very rarely see the summit. I put one foot in front of the other and take a step at a time. Before I know it, I’ve conquered that mountain.”

Are you constantly tense, low in mood, or exhausted from holding everything together? Anxiety may be affecting your sleep, confidence or relationships. You might be living with a long-term health condition, or carrying past experiences that still leave you feeling on edge. Trauma can show up as heightened alertness, self-criticism or emotional shutdown. If you’re tired of pushing through and want to understand what’s really driving these patterns, therapy can help you feel calmer and more in control.

Many of the people I work with are struggling with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, fatigue or self-esteem difficulties.
I have particular expertise working with people who have experienced trauma or adversity, leading to emotional difficulties and interpersonal problems, perhaps finding it hard to trust others or to value themselves. I understand how isolating and confusing these experiences can feel, and I work with you to make sense of them in a safe, compassionate space.

Are you an adult adoptee who’s always felt a little out of place? Maybe you’ve coped on the outside while quietly questioning your identity, carrying a fear of abandonment, or feeling like something essential is missing. These are deeply human and often hidden experiences for many adoptees. You don’t have to go through them alone. As an adoptee therapist, I work with adults who want to gently explore their story and reconnect with a stronger sense of self, in a way that feels safe and steady.

Often our anxieties and difficulties can weigh us down and we are unable to find a way forward. Perhaps we experience intrusive anxious thoughts or our inner critic is just too loud and holds us back. Maybe we keep repeating the same unhelpful behaviour again and again. Or perhaps past trauma feels too present and we are still experiencing its physical and emotional impact and the way it makes us behave. Our thoughts and feelings can be confusing and talking to friends and relatives may be too difficult. I provide a safe, respectful space in which you can explore your difficulties, gain insight and discover a way forward.

Are you struggling with everyday life at the moment, or are you not feeling yourself? Do you have lots of thoughts going round your head and you don’t know what to do about them? Taking some time out to talk to an experienced therapist can really help. Together we can explore your feelings and worries, better understand where they come from and also figure out what changes you could make to help you feel happier. I aim to listen and be truly alongside you throughout the sessions as you talk about anything that you want to bring – be it experiences from the past, things that are happening now, or concerns for the future.

A very warm welcome, my name is Patricia. I am glad you have found your way to my profile. Whatever has brought you here, I really see the courage it takes to reach out. You might be feeling overwhelmed or stuck and don’t know how to move forward. You may be finding it difficult to put words to your current feelings or make any sense of what you are experiencing and this can be both frightening and isolating. Maybe you feel lost in a fast-changing world that does not match your values, or stuck in recurring patterns that are no longer serving you.

I can work with you to help you feel understood in a confidential, non-judgemental environment. I can help you to understand how and why you think and feel the way you do and provide coping strategies. This can enable you to develop self-confidence, self-esteem and acceptance of who you are. Like me, my client base has been gloriously eclectic. I have extensive experience of working with many types of loss. Grief is painful no matter whether it's as a result of a relationship breakup, loosing touch with parts of yourself. Slowly painfully loosing a loved one to Alzheimers/Dementia, being a carer for a child with an eating disorder. I regularly work with clients who have been in some way affected by a Brain Tumour. Interestingly Anger and Rage is something i have worked with regularly in the last 4 years. If you or your partner are neurodivergent I can help you find collaborative ways of communicating together.

Chronic Pain Counsellors
How does chronic pain therapy work?
Engaging with a psychotherapist to help treat chronic pain does not mean that one’s pain is all in their head. Therapy for chronic-pain patients has been shown to benefit both the mind and the body, targeting physical symptoms and increasing daily functioning. In other words, for many, addressing their emotional health through therapy affects their physical health. A therapist can help a client challenge unhelpful thoughts about pain and develop new ways to respond to it, such as distraction or calming breathing techniques. Studies have found that therapy can be as effective as surgery for certain cases of chronic pain and many doctors recommend trying psychotherapy in advance of considering invasive surgery.

What are the most effective treatment options for chronic pain?
Stress, anxiety, depression, catastrophising, ruminating, lack of activity, and social withdrawal all make chronic pain worse. Addressing these issues, research shows, can help people gain control over their pain symptoms. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, biofeedback, and mindfulness-based stress reduction, along with greater pain-management education, have been found to help people reduce fear and disability.

Are there new treatments for chronic pain?
Many cases of chronic pain, particularly those involving back pain, remain medically unexplained. But there is evidence that changes in the brain or nervous system are caused by previous physical ailments such as tissue damage; in such cases, the brain may continue to send out pain signals despite the physical cause having healed. To aid patients under these circumstances, a recently developed treatment known as pain reprocessing therapy (PRT) is designed to help the brain “unlearn” this response. A PRT practitioner helps individuals to reduce the “threat value” of their ongoing pain signals until they can reappraise them as less threatening and fear-inducing. They also help an individual to develop new emotional regulation skills.

How long does therapy for chronic pain take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from chronic pain, especially as there may be a range of physical and psychological causes for any individual’s discomfort, but most patients should expect to see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions. Studies of pain reprocessing therapy found that many individuals’ experience of pain lessened in eight sessions over four weeks.
