Reaching out for help takes courage, particularly if your self-esteem and confidence are low. But, if you want to make changes in your life then you may need support. People come to counselling for all sorts of reasons; anxiety, relationship issues, depression, bereavement , trauma etc. Perhaps you feel inhibited, have unhealthy patterns of behaviour or your emotions may be hijacking your ability to respond and keep perspective. Whatever the reason, the chances are you are feeling deeply distressed. You don’t have to keep struggling alone. Together we can work out what is causing you to feel threatened, overwhelmed or empty.

I have had a lot of experience working with Bereavement and Loss , having worked in a local Hospice and at Cruse Bereavement Care.
I am a BACP Accredited therapist with 14 years counselling experience. There are many reasons why people come for counselling- maybe things have become difficult to cope with, or there is a crisis or you want to make changes. It can bring relief to open up and talk with someone outside the situation who does not have preconceptions and will not judge you. I offer a warm, safe, confidential space for you to talk about your situation which may then help you to cope better and work out the best way forward for you. We will talk about the best way to work together to ensure the counselling is tailored to your needs.

You might feel no-one understands why you’re not ‘moving on’ after a death , divorce or other loss .
As an integrative counsellor, I will help you work through whatever issues you bring to our shared space, using the most appropriate therapeutic approach. I recognise that what works for one person might not work for another, and no two people feel the same about what might appear to be a similar ‘thing’ on the outside. After all, you are the expert on you. You have taken the first step, by recognising that you need some help. My practice is called Elpis Therapy - indicating something we all need at times of emotional distress: ‘hope’.

Counselling helps you to explore and understand the issues that are making life difficult for you. In our first session I would ask you to tell me what you are finding difficult, I would also answer your questions about counselling and tell you more about what is involved. Most important is that you feel comfortable talking with me. I will not tell you what to do, but I will help you to explore what you want to do. I will have knowledge which may help you e.g if you are grieving any loss I can help you understand the stages if grief . I provide a warm, non-judgemental space where you can talk, be heard and feel safe.

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
