I've completed a Post Grad Cert in
Autism
with Dr Luke Beardon and I read widely the writing & research by autistic writers & advocates.
I work online with adults in the UK. I provide an accessible & compassionate service that reduces psychological distress and enables autistic people to address what is difficult in their lives. If we have not been understood and accepted we may develop ways of being and doing that do not support our well being. We keep our true selves hidden from others and whilst this protects us, it can cause much pain and limit us. With an understanding therapist we can trust, we begin to make sense of who we are, how we are and what has happened to us in our lives. We can be truer to ourselves and live with more confidence, ease and acceptance.

I believe that in times like these it is only natural to feel anxious and depressed. It is only natural to be emotional. Perhaps you are tired of being made to feel like a problem to be solved? Are you fed up up of people trying to fix you when it is the world that is broken? You might have had a bad experience with therapy in the past? I hear you. As your therapist I will help you learn to recognise what your emotions are trying to tell you. I will help you to make peace with yourself and in doing so allow your self esteem to flourish.

Like me, my client base has been gloriously eclectic. I have extensive experience of working with many types of loss. Grief is painful no matter whether it's as a result of a relationship breakup, loosing touch with parts of yourself. Slowly painfully loosing a loved one to Alzheimers/Dementia, being a carer for a child with an eating disorder. I regularly work with clients who have been in some way affected by a Brain Tumour. Interestingly Anger and Rage is something i have worked with regularly in the last 4 years. If you or your partner are neurodivergent I can help you find collaborative ways of communicating together.

I have a passion for helping clients identify more of their true selves. You may have suffered trauma, neglect/emotional abuse but I can offer you a calm, gentle and caring safe space as a qualified trauma therapist. We work together to help you achieve your goals which may include setting time aside for experimental work outside of sessions. You may not know exactly what you want, so we could potentially discover together key areas missing from your emotional needs and experiment with tools and techniques from many therapeutic approaches I have studied.

There are times in life that can feel complicated, difficult and too overwhelming to deal with on your own. You may be struggling with feelings of burnout, or a heaviness you’re not fully sure how to explain. Perhaps you’re noticing difficulties in your relationships or are struggling with an ending such as separation or bereavement. Maybe you have noticed yourself worrying more than usual and you are experiencing low mood or anxiety. It may be that you have recognised a specific issue that you would like to explore more or you may have experienced a trauma that you feel unable to move past and would like support to work through it.

I have been working with people experiencing unhappiness in all sorts of ways for many years and never yet come across anyone who's distress or anxiety or sadness didn't make sense once we had talked about it for a while. Every individual is different and special in my book but has in common the need to be heard, recognised, valued and understood. As a person-centred counsellor those four things are at the heart of my practice. Whatever your concern or difficulty, sharing what is on your mind and in your heart in a safe space is the start of healing and self acceptance. I work online and by phone as well as face to face.

I have been working in this field for over twenty years now and I still have a determined passion for it. I am trusted to hear the life narratives and difficulties of those seeking support and my aim is to help you feel heard and empowered. I have never lost sight of this aim. I have worked with people who have felt very isolated by their own thoughts, felt intense shame, and struggled to cope with overwhelming feelings. Usually they have not felt able to talk to those around them for fear of judgment, embarrassment or rejection. I feel privileged to have been trusted by my clients which enables me to help lessen their burden.

What is the most effective treatment for autism?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has come to be considered the standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder, and research has confirmed its effectiveness for many children. Therapists trained in ABA techniques work with children (and their parents) on developing social skills, communication and learning abilities, and everyday habits of hygiene and grooming. The clinician will tailor their program to the child’s particular need but the overarching goal will be to help them advance as far as possible toward independence based on their level of symptoms and decrease the need for additional special services. Families should seek a mental health professional specifically trained in ABA, and holding special certification in the technique, who has extensive experience not only with the approach but in using it with children with the same level of symptoms as the child who needs care.
How does ABA work?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) sessions, which typically focus on positive reinforcement, can be intensive, lasting two or more hours several times a week, and continuing for two years or more. Therapists can also be expected to ask parents to take an active role in reinforcing lessons. Research has found that the technique can lead to major improvements that decrease the need for additional special services.
How does treatment for autism work?
Therapy sessions based on Applied Behavior Analysis will likely be frequent, intensive, and highly structured. After a thorough assessment, a therapist will help a child understand and develop skills in a range of areas, including communication, motor skills, social skills, self-care, play, and academic skills, as well as routines of daily living like hygiene. Typically, the therapist will help a child break down the components of a behavior—often referred to as the antecedent (what prompts an action), the behavior, and the consequence(what immediately follows)—and then reward the child at every step, while also asking parents to reinforce the lessons, and the rewards, throughout the day. This core therapy may be supplemented by occupational or speech therapy, and antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants may be prescribed to address specific severe symptoms.
How long does therapy for autism take?
Some people with autism spectrum disorder may be engaged in some level of therapy for many years, but research shows that treatment will be most effective if it is begun early and delivered intensively. When therapy begins by age 3, children tend to be better able to grasp and adopt the skills needed to manage everyday life, including attending school and establishing social relationships. This type of early-intervention treatment regimen is highly structured, typically involving 20 to 40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week, along with additional hours of engagement managed by parents, for a period of two years or more, although the duration of treatment is dependent on the child’s level of symptoms and pace of progress.
