If you are reading this you know its time for help, you maybe in that moment of surrender where you finally accept one profound truth: The pain of staying the same outweighs the fear of changing. You have tried to manage the unmanageable, using alcohol or substances as a highly effective anaesthetic catching up with you. You know now that the problem isn't the substance itself; the substance was just a solution a maladaptive one to a deeper pre-existing internal issue. Your searching for peace and serenity and to feel a sense of well being with life on a journey to happiness.

Are you overwhelmed with events, feelings or relationships? Have you reached the point where you just need some support? You might be struggling with your past, with relationships, a bereavement or feeling a pressure to be something you're not. Many of my clients have had early life experiences that are really difficult to bear, contributing to anxiety, depression or both. They are coping, and surviving, but maybe in ways that they don't want to do any more.

People come to psychoanalytically informed therapy for many reasons—depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, stress, shame, or low self-esteem. What these struggles often have in common is that they have been present for some time and, despite our best efforts, do not improve when we try to manage them alone. This can leave us feeling stuck and isolated, with symptoms and frustrations that gradually intensify. The aim of this therapy is not only to alleviate conscious symptoms, but also to develop a deeper understanding and awareness of the underlying emotional life that shapes our relationships and our feelings.

I work in a collaborative way with clients who present with unaddressed trauma, relational problems, anxiety, depression, low mood and a feeling of hopelessness. I have a special interest in trauma, attachment issues and addiction. Many of my clients identify with feeling stuck in their current situation or wanting to be more self aware and connected with themselves. Identifying their mind-body connection enables the client to recognise triggers and self-regulate rather than rely upon external resources or behaviours.

Finding the right therapist can feel overwhelming. So, let me share a little about myself. Not just the credentials, but who I am and how I show up in this work, to help you get a sense of whether we might be a good fit. In our sessions, we may talk through your feelings, explore beliefs you’ve been carrying, or look at patterns that no longer feel helpful. There’s no quota you need to meet to start therapy. You don’t need a ‘right reason’ to be here. Therapy can be a space to breathe; it’s a genuine and honest conversation between two people to make sense of your experiences and what they mean to you.

Are you struggling with everyday life at the moment, or are you not feeling yourself? Do you have lots of thoughts going round your head and you don’t know what to do about them? Taking some time out to talk to an experienced therapist can really help. Together we can explore your feelings and worries, better understand where they come from and also figure out what changes you could make to help you feel happier. I aim to listen and be truly alongside you throughout the sessions as you talk about anything that you want to bring – be it experiences from the past, things that are happening now, or concerns for the future.

Alcohol Use Counsellors
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
